Gerry Cardinale will be present at AC Milan’s opening game of the season tonight against Bologna at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, and he released a statement before the match.

Some have branded the summer as a ‘revolution’ for Milan given just how much has happened since that final game of last season against Hellas Verona, after which Zlatan Ibrahimovic announced his retirement.

Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara are gone, Sandro Tonali was sold and eight new signings have arrived all in the space of a couple of months, with a ninth to follow in the form of Marco Pellegrino, due in Italy tonight.

It is an important campaign for the Rossoneri after they reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season but probably suffered domestically as a result. Now, Pioli has more squad depth and his side are considered title candidates.

Cardinale is present in Bologna for the game against Thiago Motta’s side which will open up the 2023-24 campaign, and he released some words before the game to mark the start of another interesting year.

“I didn’t want to miss being here for a start to the season that promises to be more challenging than ever, both in Italy and in Europe,” he said.

“As repeatedly underlined, our goal is to keep improving in order to win, both in Serie A and on the world stage. But we cannot do this without being open to changes and new approaches.

“And, in the current scenario, our ability to successfully achieve a positive evolution, on and off the pitch, can only materialise through shrewd and sophisticated financial management.

“Let’s not misunderstand though. It must be very clear that RedBird is here to win. But we’re here to win the ‘smart’ way, because we want to win for a long time, not just once. We may not always do well, but we won’t stop trying until we’ve won everything we can.

“We have so many new faces that we are excited to welcome to Milanello. For our part, we will accompany and support our team in every moment of this new journey with strong commitment and with a passion equal to the one they will put on the field, supported by the extraordinary support they invariably receive off the field,

“So tonight, more than ever, let me say: forza Milan, always!”

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has revealed that the plan in the transfer window is to create a squad that has 20 or more starter-level players.

It has been a very lively summer for Milan which started with the departures of Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara as directors, then the sale of Sandro Tonali followed for a club-record fee as the first real act of the new management.

Milan have then been the most active of any Serie A team in the summer window having signed Marco Sportiello, Luka Romero, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Christian Pulisic, Noah Okafor, Samuel Chukwueze, Tijjani Reijnders and Yunus Musah.

Pioli spoke to DAZN not long before kick-off in the 2023-24 Serie A opener for his side against Bologna at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, with his comments relayed by MilanNews. He chose to field three of his new signings, but not Samuel Chukwueze and Noah Okafor.

What sensations are there?

“There is always the excitement of the first game of the season. We are excited, we are curious to see what we will be able to do.”

What is the thinking behind your selectiosn?

“[I have chosen] The ones who are more ready play, we have been working together since 19 July while instead the others who arrived – I am referring to Chukwueze, Okafor and Musah – arrived only two weeks ago and therefore it is normal that the others are further on, but I don’t think it will take time to get in line with their team-mates.”

You now have more options from the bench…

“The idea is to have a full squad, the idea is to have 20-22 starters because we will have many games to play and we want to be competitive everywhere. We need players who are up to par.

“We have to go match by match, but I am convinced that we are already forming a good group and a good team so now let’s give the pitch the floor.”

AC Milan started their 2023-24 Serie A season with three points, beating Bologna 2-0 in the sweltering summer heat of the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.

Both goals for Milan came in a frantic opening half-hour, with Olivier Giroud getting the first one as he thumped in from a narrow angle to give Tijjani Reijnders his first assist in the process.

Christian Pulisic got his first Serie A goal less than 10 minutes later, rocketing a strike inside the far past from outside the box after some neat interplay with Giroud.

The second half was much more measured from the Rossoneri though they did have chances to inflict an even heavier defeat on their hosts. Nonetheless, they kept pace with the other rivals in Inter, Napoli and Juventus who all also won.

Stefano Pioli decided to go with the line-up that was used for the majority of preseason including Rade Krunic at the base of the midfield, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tijjani Reijnders as box-to-box players and Christian Pulisic over Samuel Chukwueze on the right wing.

Bologna were inches away from taking the lead within 25 seconds as they quickly spread the ball out to their left-back Lykogiannis, who let fly from 25 yards and rattled the crossbar with Mike Maignan seemingly beaten.

With their first real threatening attack of the game, Milan took the lead inside the 12th minute. A cross from Pulisic on his favoured left foot went deep to the other side of the box, where Reijnders was waiting to lay the ball back across goal first time, and Giroud tucked in from a narrow angle.

Bologna set about trying to level the score instantly and continued their high press, with Zirkzee finding space to run at Malick Thiaw who managed to block his effort, though the follow-up was lashed into the side netting by Ferguson.

In the 21st minute Milan doubled their advantage in emphatic fashion. Pulisic made a dart inside and played a smart one-two with his former Chelsea team-mate Giroud, receiving the ball back and hammering inside the far left post with a rocket from 20 yards.

Milan at this point smelled blood and the opportunity to potentially kill the contest before half an hour had been played. Another cross-field ball from Pulisic landed at the feet of Giroud who hit if first time into the ground and drew a diving stop from Skorupski.

The Rossoneri were occasionally still showing some signs of being a bit shaky defensively, such as when Ferguson was allowed to stride into a shot from just outside the corner of the box that was thankfully straight at Maignan, who parried.

Pioli’s men continued to win the ball back and attack in waves and could have had a third when Leao was found in space on the left side and Theo made a bombing run forward down the middle. The Frenchman got a toe to the ball before the keeper, but the second touch on it was from Skorupski who did well to clear cleanly.

Leao rode his luck a little bit in the final minute of the first half when a Tomori giveaway saw a ball played over the top to Aebischer, who was hauled down by the Portuguese winger right on the edge of the box as Maignan was catching it.

The Rossoblu kept getting chances to get back into the game and wasting them, with the final one of the first half being a free header inside the box from a cross that Posch put well wide.

The end-to-end nature of the game continued in the opening minutes of the second half when Orsolini took a tumble claiming a penalty for a shove by Tomori, then Theo wanted a free-kick after being brought down on one of his surging runs, earning a yellow card for his protests.

Milan’s strategy seemed simple: to soak up Bologna’s attempts to build pressure and then move in numbers up the other end. Krunic could have been a bit more ruthless inside the box after getting the ball back from Reijnders but he took too many touches and bounced off his man.

Ndoye came very close to halving the deficit for Motta’s men when he surged past Calabria into the box and got to the six-yard line, but Maignan’s outstretched leg saved his low shot.

The French goalkeeper was called into action twice more in the following minutes, firstly from Aebischer which he denied with his shoulder and then from flick through a crowd of bodies from the resulting corner.

With 18 minutes left on the clock, Pioli decided to make a quadruple change. Giroud came off for Noah Okafor, Tommaso Pobega was brought on in place of Loftus-Cheek, Pierre Kalulu took Calabria’s spot and Samuel Chukwueze got his Serie A debut with Pulisic coming off.

In truth, the game then began to meander slowly towards the end result as both teams looked to be tired in the 30-degree Emilian heat. Pobega forced a low save from Skorupski with a shot from distance, but the clear chances had evaporated.

The final change came from Pioli with three minutes left as Thiaw was withdrawn and Simon Kjaer came on.

Leao was very unlucky not to fully put the game to bed when he hit the post in the dying minutes. The former Lille man was sent away down the left and rolled sumptuously onto his left foot, beating everyone with a low shot that cannoned back off the woodwork

AC Milan claimed all three points in their opening game of the season as they beat Bologna 2-0. For Christian Pulisic, among a few others, it was a perfect start and down below are the player ratings for the Rossoneri.

Starting XI
Maignan (6.5): He made a couple of very good saves and was very important in the build-up, more often than not finding a teammate with his long passing. A good start for him.

Calabria (6): The captain was a tad shaky at times when in possession but ultimately did well as an inverted full-back. Some things clearly need to be worked out but that’s more on a tactical level.

Thiaw (6.5): He was the best out of the centre-backs this evening with a high position and several interceptions. A couple of misplaced passes, but that was to be expected given the lack of alternatives at times.

Tomori (6): An okay game from the Englishman, who did make one mistake that could have cost Milan dearly. However, okay apart from that as said and it’s something to build on for him.

Hernandez (6): He certainly had his trademark moments but lacked the final touch today. The heat (35 degrees in Bologna) probably had a lot to do with it as he didn’t look that energised in the second half.

Hernandez Milan
Loftus-Cheek (6): In the first half, we didn’t see that much of him but upon reflection, he did get stuck in a lot. He definitely focused more on giving Milan a physical presence than being brilliant on the ball, but he had a couple of good moments in that sense as well.

Krunic (6): He did what was needed from him and perhaps a little more. It’s clear that Milan are still a bit defensively exposed even if that isn’t directly the Bosnian’s fault.

Reijnders (6.5): Got the assist for the second goal after a great run into the box and he continued to move around the pitch in a smart manner. He did also help out in the defensive phase, which was necessary to see.

Pulisic (7.5 – MOTM): That first half was simply brilliant from him and although he faded a bit in the second, this was the perfect start from him. Milan have been missing the type of cross we saw on the first goal and his strike to double the lead was fantastic.

Christian Pulisic goal bologna
Giroud (7): Given the pre-season, it went surprisingly well for the Frenchman tonight. He combined very well with his teammates (as especially seen on the second goal) and dropped down when needed too. The first goal was a nice finish as well.

Leao (6): He struggled out there tonight with many ‘almost’ moments, including an effort that hit the post. The quality is obviously there, we all know that, but this wasn’t his best game and he looked a bit fatigued.

Substitutes
Kalulu (6): Nothing special from him but he did what was needed defensively to see out the game.

Pobega (6): A nice appearance off the bench with some good movement and passing. Hopefully, he can continue like that.

Chukwueze (N/A): We didn’t see enough to give him a rating. He was very cautious when on the ball, which is understandable.

Okafor (N/A): We didn’t see enough to give him a rating. He barely touched the ball.

Kjaer (N/A): We didn’t see enough to give him a rating.

There was a scary moment at the end of the game against Bologna tonight as Rafael Leao fell to the floor in pain after the full-time whistle.

Goals from Giroud and Christian Pulisic gave Milan three vital points to start the season in the right way at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara against a Bologna side that have become a very tricky proposition under Thiago Motta.

As soon as the referee Luca Pairetto blew for full-time, Leao kicked the ball high in the air. Soon after, the Portuguese winger began to limp and slumped to the ground, clearly in some pain.

After a few minutes the cameras picked up on it and showed him during what was a presumable attack of cramps. His team-mates noticed this, and stretched out his leg as is the practice in these cases.

It is nothing serious for the Milan No.10, who definitely gave the Rossoneri fans a scare.

Following the 2-0 win against Bologna, AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli spoke to the media about his team’s performance at Renato Dall’Ara. He praised the new signings and also touched on what can be done better.

The Rossoneri had a very strong first half as Olivier Giroud opened the scoring after just 11 minutes. Christian Pulisic sent in a great cross that Tijjani Reijnders pulled back, finding the Frenchman who made no mistakes.

Pulisic then bagged a goal himself after a one-two with Giroud, sending a belter past the Bologna goalkeeper. Speaking to DAZN after the game, as cited by MilanNews, Pioli shared his thoughts on the game and the new signings.

On the match…

“It was the approach we wanted: we divided the game into four halves. The first was important. We still have to work hard and Bologna played a good game. Now, we have the possibility of understanding where to grow further.”

The new right-wing of Milan with Pulisic and Chukwueze…

“Regardless of this, I always think that the more you give your best players possession, the more ways through you will find. We still have to work on our balance, but whoever has arrived can give us a big hand. I like the attitude of my players, there’s still a lot to work on.”

How reassured do you feel about the depth of the squad?

“I’m satisfied because when speaking with the directors, I asked for particular characteristics. Not names but specific characteristics in certain roles and they have arrived. Having one-on-one players on the flanks is important. A good group is being born, the old ones have done everything to get the new ones acclimatised.

“I knew that Pulisic was a talent when I spoke to him in the phone calls. I was convinced that we would sign a player with very high quality. He’s also very flexible, he can make us catch our breath: he can play very well on the left in place of Leao, he can play behind the attack… So that’s good.”

On Giroud…

“He is an example, a technical leader, especially in terms of his attitude. He’s always available to work for the team. He’s happy, this is important and he feels good with us. He’s not so young anymore so we’ll need to find a way to make him catch his breath but for us, he’s a very very important player, I’m very happy to train him.”

On Leao…

“I talk to Rafa every day, I try to make him understand that he has superpowers. Superpowers must be made available to the team: if we all learn to sacrifice ourselves, if we all learn to work well off the ball, I think we can get some satisfaction because we have so much quality with the ball. It was incredibly hot today and he did a great job. Today it was 60 degrees in the changing rooms, not 40. We preferred to let them catch their breath on the pitch.”

Who fills the void left by Ibrahimovic?

“We miss Zlatan, that’s for sure. But I think the best thing he has done is that he has made us grow mentally. The absence of him is felt but we grew up thanks to him. If we speak from a character point of view, then Mike is the one suitable for mental leadership in this team.”

What could have been done better?

“In the second half, we could have handled the ball better and dropped down at the right times.”

Milan will take on Torino next and that game is scheduled for Saturday. It’s no surprise that the manager used all his five subs, therefore, and you can take a look at our player ratings here

Olivier Giroud couldn’t hide his delight that he and Christian Pulisic were able to get on the scoresheet as AC Milan won their first game of the new season 2-0 against Bologna.

Giroud’s goal got Milan going after less than 15 minutes after he tucked away a first-time ball from Tijjani Reijnders that went across the face of goal and found him at the far stick, making it 1-0 early on.

There was something quite interesting about that goal: it is the first he has scored with his right foot out of the 33 he has netted for the club in all competitions.

Not long after, he would play a nice one-two with Pulisic – a combination seen in their Chelsea days – and the USA international would fire home with a rocket from 20 yards.

Giroud spoke to DAZN after the game to reflect on what was a hard fought three points against a tricky Thiago Motta-led side, with his comments relayed by MilanNews and translated below.

A great evening, what message did Milan send?

“I think we are very happy with the performance. We started the game well, we were effective in front of goal. At 2-0 we could have managed a little more but it wasn’t easy. I’m even happier for Christian [Pulisic] who scored.”

You celebrated by making a heart with your hands, who was it for?

“It’s for my family and for all Milan fans.”

How are the new signings settling in?

“I know Pulisic very well, we played together with a good relationship on the pitch. We are very happy with Ruben and Tijjani, they all integrated very well.”

Will Milan be in the Scudetto fight?

“We know how important it is to start the season well. The season will be very very long. We wanted to show that today we are almost ready.”

It could hardly have been a better Serie A debut for Christian Pulisic as he got himself on the scoresheet during AC Milan’s 2-0 win over Bologna tonight.

The American winger was Milan’s fourth signing of the summer window as he followed Ruben Loftus-Cheek in swapping west London for the north of Italy. The full background on his move was outlined by The Athletic earlier today.

His debut couldn’t have gone much better, as it was in the 21st minute that Milan doubled their advantage in emphatic fashion thanks to his strike.

Pulisic made a dart inside and played a smart one-two with his former Chelsea team-mate Giroud, receiving the ball back and hammering inside the far left post with a rocket from 20 yards.

Pulisic spoke to DAZN after the game to reflect on the result and the team’s performance, with his comments relayed by MilanNews, but first he answered some questions about his decision to try a new adventure.

How do you reflect on the win?

“A fantastic start, I’m really happy to be part of this team. We did well scoring the first two goals straight away because the match was difficult and obviously I’m happy to have scored.”

Why did you choose Milan?

“Speaking with Giroud, Tomori, Loftus-Cheek… As you can see there is chemistry, Giroud gave me a great assist. Being here is the right step for my career.”

You formed an attacking trio with Giroud and Leao…

“It’s easy to play with strong players. Giroud is always in the right place to score, Leao we all know what he can do, he’s really dangerous. It’s a good attack.”

Are you looking forward to your debut at San Siro?

“The fans were fantastic away today, so I dare not imagine at home. But I’ve already seen the atmosphere at San Siro when we played Chelsea last year. It will be nice to have the fans on my side this time (laughs).”

What is your personal aim?

“We want to compete in all competitions, personally I want to keep scoring goals like tonight and help the team win titles.”

Is there already a favourite for the Scudetto?

“It’s too early to say (laughs).”

Incredible first half performance from Christian Pulisic for Milan.

Great movement and desire. His ball to Reijnders lead to Giroud’s finish, and he even netted a fantastic goal for himself.

Not too shabby ⭐️
