1) Arsenal 0-3 Coventry: 14th August 1993
Arsenal hadn't won the title for two years but with George Graham at the helm, Tony Adams at the back and Ian Wright up front great things were expected of the Gunners. The Highbury home crowd were probably expecting a nice easy start to the campaign with Coventry at home but they hadn't counted on Mickey Quinn who made mincemeat of the famous Arsenal back line and scored a hat-trick as the Sky Blues ran riot in one of the shocks of the season.
2) Southampton 6-3 Manchester United: October 26, 1996
Contrary to popular belief this was not the infamous "grey shirts" debacle (that was a 3-1 win for the Saints the previous season), and United's only excuse for the collapse was the early sending off of Roy Keane after just 20 minutes. An Egil Ostenstad hat-trick, a brace from Eyal Berkovic and a delicious chip over Peter Schmeichel by Matt Le Tissier saw the Saints record one of their once regular wins over United who went on to win the title, while Southampton finished the season in 17th and only stayed up on goal difference.
3) Liverpool 0-1 Barnsley: November 22, 1997
It was Barnsley's first ever season in the top flight in their 102-year history, but for the most part they were unable to enjoy it, spending most of it in the bottom three. Only the most optimistic of Tykes fans would have hoped for anything when they traveled to Anfield for this match against a Liverpool side pushing for the title and with a 100 per cent home record. The match seemed to be going to script as the home side were dominant in the early stages, only to go behind to an Ashley Ward goal in the 35th minute - virtually Barnsley's only chance in the entire game. Thereafter the Reds battered the Tykes but defenders Peter Markstedt and Arjan De Zeeuw and goalkeeper Lars Leese somehow kept them at bay to record a famous victory.
4) Liverpool 0-1 Watford: August 14, 1999
In their first season back in the top flight, Watford managed just six wins all season long. Surprisingly, one of those came at Anfield when Graham Taylor's side 'pulled a Barnsley' and completed a smash-and-grab job on Gerard Houllier's Reds after Tommy Mooney took advantage of some shocking defending to score the only goal of the game after 15 minutes.
5) Arsenal 0-3 Middlesbrough, April 14, 2001
Middlesbrough were battling for survival and had brought in Terry Venables to help Bryan Robson keep the club in the top flight, while Arsenal still had hopes of catching Manchester United in the title race. With a team sheet featuring David Seaman, Lee Dixon, Martin Keown, Tony Adams, Robert Pires, Patrick Vieira, Freddie Ljungberg and Thierry Henry, the Gunners were probably wondering how many they would put past a Boro side including the likes of Paul Okon and Dean Windass. Two own-goals from Brazilians Edu and Silvinho and a strike from Hamilton Ricard later, and the Gunners were out of the running for the title, while Boro took a giant step to securing their Premier League safety.
6) Arsenal 2-4 Charlton: November 4, 2001
A blip in an otherwise fabulous season for the Gunners, Charlton ruthlessly punished their hosts for failing to take their chances. Bergkamp, Henry, Pires, Ashley Cole and even Martin Keown all squandered great opportunities and the Gunners had 27 shots in all, but still came off second best to the Addicks, who triumphed thanks to goals from Steve Brown, Claus Jensen, Jason Euell and a Richard Wright own goal. Arsenal put this defeat behind them and went on to win the League and FA Cup Double.
7) Manchester United 1-3 Fulham: October 25, 2003
Make no mistake, this was no hit-and-run job. Fulham were good value for their win and were even unlucky to concede at all. Lee Clarke, Steed Malbranque and Junichi Inamoto scored for the visitors as a stunned Old Trafford crowd witnessed their team being taken apart by Chris Coleman's men. The home fans' only consolation was Diego Forlan's first goal of the season. Even Fergie admitted afterwards that Fulham "could have scored six".
8) Middlesbrough 3-0 Chelsea: February 11, 2006
Sunday's defeat to Sunderland is not the first time Roman Abramovich's Chelsea have suffered at the hands of North East tormentors. Jose Mourinho's champions were on their way to a second consecutive title and had been beaten just once in the league all season when they arrived at the Riverside to face a Middlesbrough side who had been thrashed 4-0 at home by Aston Villa a week earlier. Fabio Rochemback, Stewart Downing and Yakubu scored the goals that stunned the Special One, to such an extent he didn't even try to find an excuse for his biggest ever defeat as Chelsea boss. "You can say it's my worst Premiership defeat in charge here. Perhaps they might want to make a few copies of the video, to show others how to beat us. We didn't deserve to lose against Manchester City and Manchester United, but this was deserved," he said.
9) Arsenal 1-2 Hull: September 27, 2008
Back in the days before Phil Brown became a karaoke singing, bizarre team-talk giving, perma-tanned parody of himself, Hull were new in the Premier League and were ruffling a few feathers. None more so than on this day at the Emirates when goals from Daniel Cousin and Geovanni gave them an incredible away-day victory over the Gunners that stunned the home crowd into even more silence than usual.
10) Liverpool 1-2 Blackpool: October 3, 2010
Much like Hull, Blackpool arrived in the top flight as the plucky under-resourced under-dogs in a land of Goliath-sized giants. And, just like Hull, they took on one of the big boys in their own back yard and came away with all three points. Goals from Charlie Adam and Luke Varney ensured the pressure on new Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson cranked up a notch, and gave the Tangarines three precious points in their fight for survival. This entry narrowly beats Burnley's 1-0 win over Manchester United last season on the grounds that Burnley were at home, while Blackpool were at Anfield.
