At least Shein has addressed without mincing words the problem facing Tanzania, moral decay!
As per Per Daily News:
Meanwhile, the Vice-President, Dr Ali Mohamed Shein, has urged religious dominations in the country to back the government's efforts in ensuring that the country is well governed with leaders of high integrity.
He was officiating at the special congregation held on New Year's eve at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam to welcome the New Year (2010) organized by the Community of Christian Churches.
Dr Shein said the community and all religious followers should take the opportunity to brainstorm on all matters that occurred last year and hope for the brighter future.
The Vice-President said that the country witnessed many incidents of moral decay last year, that almost tarnished the good image of the country. He called for the religious community to play a leading role in reversing the trend.
"We have a lot of challenges ahead, including the crucial task of fighting corruption, especially as we head for the general elections late this year.
Religious communities should make sure that politicians do not use religious lines to attain their political ambitions," he said.
Dr Shein challenged political parties to prepare well for general elections by presenting their manifestos, instead of abusing each other to attract more followers.
He called for maximum solidarity among Tanzanians this year, saying that the government would make sure all steps are taken to have a peaceful process towards the general elections.
The Chairman of the congregation, Bishop Godfrey Malasi, said religious denominations had the obligation to assist the government face its challenges, especially in respect of good governance.
"While the government remains with an obligation of ensuring good governance, religious denominations and all followers should always assist it to effect it," he said.
At the St Joseph Cathedral, the Archbishop of Dar es Salaam Archdiocese, Polycarp Cardinal Pengo, officiated at the special mass to welcome the New Year by calling on Tanzanians to avoid selfishness.
He was bitter with people increasingly being selfish with few members of public accumulating wealth and enjoying the cake of the country while the majority was suffering.
The country is extremely worried as our national peace is at the crossroads, if these differences are not dealt with. Let us get rid of this poisonous element and look for a brighter new year," he pointed out.
Cardinal Pengo urged leaders aspiring to contest various political posts in the country to stop cheating people by using religious propaganda. He described such approach as dangerous to the national peace and harmony.
