The Battle of ๐๐ฑ๐๐ฎ was the result of Italian encroachments south of their colony of Eritrea on the Red Sea. Though bound by the ๐ง๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ช๐๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐น๐ฒ (1889) to friendship, the Italians and Ethiopians had different opinions about the nature of that friendship. This was the famous "mistranslation" where the Italian treaty indicated Ethiopia would be a protectorate of Italy, while Emperor Menelik II(Of Ethiopia) argued no such wording existed in his copy and he discovered that the language in the two versions of the treaty differed.
The first showdown occurred when Menelik summoned his forces and defeated the Italians at the battle of ๐๐บ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐น๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ on 7 December 1895
The second encounter was at ๐ ๐ฒ๐ธ๐ฒ๐น๐น๐ฒ, where the Italians were stationed behind a strong fort. The Ethiopians surrounded the Italians for two weeks and upon ๐๐บ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ ๐ง๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐๐'๐ advice, cut off the fortโs water supply.
๐๐บ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐น๐ถ๐ธ called on all Ethiopians to defend their country, family and religion.They had inferior weapons but a strong cause.
Then the final battle, ๐๐ฑ๐๐ฎ March 1, 1896 ensured ethiopias independence, making it the only African country never to be colonised.
