CCM Union presidential candidate, Jakaya Kikwete, has advised pastoral nomads to embark on modern animal husbandry, warning that their present livestock keeping method will render the areas pastureless in the next five years.
Addressing campaign rallies in Kilindi and Handeni districts in Tanga Region on Wednesday, President Kikwete said nomadic livestock keeping style had no future under the ongoing process to ensure organised land ownership.
Land ownership will be controlled and pasture will be definitely declining, he said, adding, however, that the sector was very important to the countrys economy.
Mr Kikwete said it was for this reason that the government was envisaging a special programme to develop the sector, as was the case with the agriculture sector which is administered by the Agricultural Sector Development Programme (ASDP).
He said the government had embarked on a programme of improving the sector by putting in place conducive environment that would ensure availability of pasture, improved bulls and veterinary services.
Meanwhile, the president cautioned Tanzanians not to be carried away by reports on the invention of AIDS treatment, saying researchers were still testing the efficacy of the drug on rats and monkeys. He said it may take up to 10 years before cure for the deadly disease was obtained and put into use and warned the people not to put their lives at risk.
If you are not serious you will perish there is no cure yet for this disease the drug that has been invented in the US is still on trials, he said.
He also spoke on progress of Korogwe-Mikumi road construction.
After that, according to our 2010 2015 election manifesto, we will start preparations for construction of a tarmac road from Handeni - Kibirashi Kondoa to Singida.
He also assured the people that villages in Kilindi would be supplied with reliable water, power and mobile phone networks in the near future.
The CCM aspirant began a campaign tour of Tanga Region from Mvomero in Morogoro Region on Wednesday. He covered Kilindi, Handeni and Pangani, and is expected to proceed to the other districts on Thursday.
