AN Indian firm, Abhijeet Group, has said will generate 1,200MW of electricity that would be injected into the national grid.
The Abhijeet Group Director, Mr Abhijeet Jayaswal, told reporters in Dar es Salaam on Monday that electricity would be generated within 36 months (three years) after reaching an agreement with the government.
Mr Jayaswal has already met the Minister for Energy and Minerals, Mr Wiliam Ngeleja and discussed the investment plans and on Tuesday he is scheduled to meet officials from the National Development Corporation (NDC) over the same issue.
"We have been inspired to come and invest in the country which has a lot of potential. We will be able to start the work as soon as all procedures are completed with government authorities and the minister has pledged to give us maximum cooperation," he said.
Abhijeet has already set aside 3 billion US Dollars (about 4.5trl/-) for the project which is also expected to create direct employment to more than 10,000 people.
The company, he said, was set to introduce Underground Coal Gasification, an environmental friendly state-of-the-art technology.
On government's investment policy, he said his company has looked at it and realized that the country has an appealing environment for his company to come and invest.
Tanzania, he noted, will be the second country for his company to invest a power generation project in Africa after investing in a similar venture in Gabon.
Abhijeet Group has also completed a 5000MW electricity generation project in India and is ranked as one of the major power producing companies in India, he said.
The company, he said, also deals with road construction, mining activities, as well as cement manufacturing.
Both Mr Ngeleja and his deputy Mr Adam Malima could not be reached for comments.
