Insignia increases focus on education.
As corporate social responsibility (CSR) turns into a legal mandate in some countries and an option to various countries, various researchers have discovered that three out of every four companies already have a CSR team in place or are planning to have one in the next couple of years. 58 percent of the companies are proven to have an annual centralized budget for sustainability activities.
The studies have also found that a large majority; above 80 percent of companies pinpoint education as the top core area for their sustainable activities.
Insignia, Tanzania’s leading manufacturer and provider of specialty paints, coatings and surface treatments takes CSR as an integral part of their company’s policy. The corporate lends a big support in helping out the local community through philanthropic activities in education.
According to Mr. Kishan Dhebar, the Managing Director of Insignia Limited, one of the most significant indicators of social progress is education. Which also plays a decisive role for a society to achieve self‐sustainable and equal development. With an increasing global realization of how business contributes to social objectives, Insignia Limited has recognized that education deserves a higher level of corporate involvement.
“We thoroughly believe that we can make a difference through providing relief to the needy and under-privileged.” Says Mr. Kishan
The projects which we have engaged with includes; Financial assistance to specialist school for the blind and deaf in Ilala, Providing courses at VETA and other technical colleges in Dar es Salaam, on the fundamentals of the painting techniques required for professional application of paints, as well as giving much needed financial support to public schools in regions such as Moshi, Dodoma and Dar es Salaam. Affirms Mr. Dhebar.
However it is known that the provision of education is the responsibility of national governments yet, business and industry offers continuous professional development, training and various support in education sector.
Very often, companies and societies in general have to respond to challenging issues, such as skill mismatches where candidates lack certain competencies. To form the bridge Insignia Limited has also invested in training programs that strengthen local painters’ skills in Tanzania. The company has taken into consideration the level of competency amongst the local painters and made an initiative since 2003 to raise the knowledge of their practice to new levels. Over 100,000 local Tanzania painters have had an opportunity to be trained with no cost at all by Insignia Limited.
The Painters have acquired highly qualified knowledge and skills on paint such as what is paint, benefits, ingredients, color harmonization, different types of surfaces their characteristics and application methods. The trainings also acts a platform to address common product complaints and introduction of new products, techniques and safety measures.
The trainings also have a financial value to the painters as the techniques taught allow them to be more aware of cost effective means as well as reduce the trial and error process for achieving the final result. The issuing of participation certificates at the end of the sessions from a recognized company has further benefited a lot of the people in securing jobs.
Mr Kishan stresses that they are very proud of their efforts on charitable activities as the Tanzanian leading manufacture of Paints. He also expressed on their desire on environment protection that is driven by their own actions in the painting Industry. We provide support in the areas of education and environment that makes us hold ourselves to the very highest standards of business ethics and integrity. Says the Director.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) generates a win-win opportunity for companies and governments. Through CSR companies can create synergistic value for both business and society.
