One of the most senior officers in the Tanzania Police Force is now under scrutiny for alleged police brutality against opposition members.

Commissioner of Police Awadhi Juma Haji, who oversees operations and training, has come into the public spotlight following accusations of police violence during the arrest of opposition figures in Mbeya on Sunday at a prohibited youth rally.

CP Haji personally led the rapid operation that resulted in the detention of hundreds of CHADEMA party leaders and their supporters. More than 500 people were arrested in the police crackdown, which took place in several towns and cities.

Buses and personal vehicles carrying CHADEMA leaders and supporters heading to Mbeya for the planned opposition rally on International Youth Day were intercepted at police roadblocks.

During the operation, CHADEMA leaders claimed they were subjected to brutal assaults by the police.
