Chinese billionaire entrepreneur Jack Ma has picked Kenya’s start-up incubator Nailab to run a Sh1 billion African entrepreneurs funding programme.

The plan targets innovators churning out digital solutions that address challenges and strengthen the continent’s digital economy.

Nailab is set to work closely with the Jack Ma Foundation team and other innovation hubs in rolling out the “Netpreneur Prize” across the continent. Nailab will also help identify other critical partners on the continent that will help roll out the program. The Chinese business magnate and Alibaba Group founder Jack Ma launched the fund on Wednesday during a conference in South Africa.

The Sh1 billion kitty will award 100 African entrepreneurs over the next 10 years.

The Jack Ma Foundation will from next year host annual pitch competition for the shortlisted 10 best business ideas.

The best business idea will take home Sh100 million in prize money with the rest receiving grant funding from the foundation and have access to Netpreneur’s network of business leaders.

"This is one of those opportunities that we believe and know will create a network of entrepreneurs that not only showcase the African startups but will help tell the African startup stories as they drive change in the continent," said Nailab Founder and chief executive officer, Sam Gichuru.

Great news, I still regret the day I stopped working with this Nailab CEO bwana Sam, should have stuck with him back then, the guy has grown from grace to grace.
Good for him and the country and the continent.
Won't come as a shocker seeing Kenyans dominating this “Netpreneur Prize” as always....

Great stuff!. Anyone who's not technology oriented in the 21st century is a misplaced feller. This provides a perfect platform for young innovators across Kenya and Africa at large to not only exploit but showcase their packages in relation to the same. Good enough that Kenya is chosen as the 'base' and that speaks volumes cause it happened for a reason. Hapa huwezi waona. They are busy perusing through the Kenyan dailies just in case they come across a controversial David Ndii's article to counter this one.

These hubs never lift poor out of poverty but increase gap between poor and rich.

Software technology need a vibrant industrial base to be useful. Otherwise developers will be coding basic stuff like html without anything more advanced like embedded software development.

You clearly are unaware of what NAILAB is all about. It's good to do some background research before commenting irrationally. This is good advice, you can take it to the bank

Just leave the guy alone. He probably had just awaken from deep slumber, accidentally his fingers stroke the key pad as he was busy washing his face or something.........LMFAO!..

We are aware Nailab are the office trying to replicate mpesa with m-vitu apps (according to prof. Ndemo?)

Kenya should just divert that jack ma money to agriculture where its needed more.

Misplaced thinking. Kama the way cs wa transport alichora BRT lanes Thika road to deal with traffic jam., or the guy who cancelled construction of greenfield terminal at JKIA ati we dont need it now, forgetting the world is moving fast, now we have direct flights to states, biashara has increased we need it now than ever, Rwanda are constructing theirs, if they succeed they are likely to take the air transport hub status from Kenya, they already have direct flight to the U.S.., angalia mbele, Agriculture is sorted, check out govt budget and plans that are underway.,

Adding to that, technology need to be localise, some problems are better solved locally rather than one size fit all approach, the way we see big tech company like Apple Google or Facebook are doing.

I'm sure if we ask you where apples and oranges comes from you'll say super market or some shop near you.

Am Yet to see any commercialy successful app out of nailab.Incubation is only one part of a tech business, commercialization is NOT possible in an environment that favours Dominant Safaricom that has now illegaly gone to app/ecommerce business. That said, Jack ma is doing a good job

if you dont know about Nailab, then you don't know anything

Exactly the answer i was expecting from Silver spoon generation.
A silver spoon generation who has witnessed and used superior infrastructure that you grandchildren can only dream of or watch on Kenyan TV shows and documentaries.
Kenya sio omba omba kama hawa wenu wamejaa hapa KENYA. Chakula toka Tanzania tunakinunua kwa hela zetu because we can afford.

Acha ongea pumba ndugu,
If you are chosen as a starting point then keep quite and prove yourselves to justify the decision, in the next 3-5 years time we have to sit down and evaluate the action progress, it is was never meant to be static...

I call it grade C infrastructure, look the way bridges are collapsing, 1965 locomotives, buildings are falling apart is there anything to be proud about?
