Tanzania's outgoing president Jakaya Kikwete has told how he is looking forward to stepping down in October this year, describing the job of leading his country as "stressful and thankless".

Two terms in high office were more than enough for him, Mr Kikwete added during a speech at the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars in Washington DC.

"After 10 years, you need to move on. It's been 10 years since I came to this high profile office," he said.

"I was very young, just 55. But what I can tell you about this job is that it is stressful and thankless." His comments might furrow some brows among his neighbours, who have been accused of overstaying their welcome in office.

To the north, Yoweri Museveni has been in office in Uganda since 1986 when he helped to topple dictators Idi Amin and Milton Obote, and is now serving his fourth term amid accusations of electoral fraud and opposition intimidation.

To the west, there were deadly clashes in January after it was suggested that Joseph Kabila, president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, might try to change the constitution to enable him to run for a third term.

Both Malawi and Zambia are beacons in the region for power having changed hands peacefully several times in recent years, but further south in Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, the president, has clung on to high office, allegedly using voter intimidation, violence and poll manipulation, since 1980.

Further west, Angola's Eduardo dos Santos has been in power since 1979.

None the less, Nigeria's Goodluck Jonathan set a strong example for the region last week when he conceded defeat to his presidential rival Muhammadu Buhari in crunch elections.

Asked at the Washington event why he believed African leaders had a tendency to cling to power, Mr Kikwete took a diplomatic approach. "I should not speak on their behalf," he said.

"You need to invite them and get their opinions."

You have got what you wanted you don't want to lead us anymore Mr. Politician....

Should Tanzanians be thankful to a ruler who has spent most of his time in office traveling abroad, has been protecting drug traffickers, corrupt government officials, plunderers of flora and fauna from the country?

This is someone who has been presiding over a country known for killing albinos and yet he contends his country is peaceful!!

Give Tanzanians a break, the sooner he vacates his office in October the better the country will be.

Kikwete has to leave the office becz he has proved the total failure in rulling the country.

Not good comments ever seen before, under his excellent leadership every one can access secondary education every where over the country something never happened before.probably even you stupid commenters are among the product for those school and now you have courageous to write these non senses here.

Over many years we have been suffering from rough roads now day under his leadership have at least tarmac roads for the most important routes.
we see clearly expansion of power infrastructure almost everywhere and you stupid beaches are among the witness at your areas just to mention few. even the freedom to write nonsense over here can not rule out Kikwete's leadership. What had you wanted him to do?

This statement can only be said by a person who never knew what he wanted to achieve when he vied for presidency. Did he think that the job would be easy? He wants to be thanked - for what? For doing his job?

We are not given these services as an aid ,we are tax payers,we need to enjoy our taxes, why don't you argue for more 400 journeys he has made for 10 years while in white house?have done an analysis how those journeys have costed tax payers?think reasonably ABUNUAS.He better leave the office even tommorow, can you see how he has staged our national unity in terms of region fractions/tensions.
