Atop Russian general who has reportedly been detained following Yevgeny Prigozhin’s coup last weekend was a VIP member of the Wagner private military company, newly revealed documents suggest.
Sergei Surovikin, the former commander of Russia’s forces in Ukraine, had a personal registration number with the mercenary group, according to documents obtained by the Russian investigative Dossier Center and seen by CNN.
Gen Surovikin, who has not been seen since early on Saturday, is listed alongside at least 30 other senior Russian military and intelligence officials, whom the Dossier Center says are also VIP members of the Wagner group, CNN reported.
It is not clear what VIP membership of the Wagner entails, including whether there is any financial benefit. US intelligence sources told the New York Times earlier this week that Gen Surovikin may have had prior knowledge of the mutiny.
