Redditors have discovered a simple way to remove ads from YouTube videos by adding a period to the domain name.
The trick - first reported on Reddit and subsequently by Android Police - involves simply placing a period (or full stop) after the .com in the URL of the video you’re watching. This seems to remove all pre-roll ads, ads that might appear midway through the video and advertising overlays.
It seems the trick only works in certain browsers. In my tests, it worked in Google Chrome on both Mac desktop and Android mobile, as well as in Chromium-based browsers such as the new version of Microsoft Edge and the non-Chromium Safari. However, it failed in Firefox, where inserting the period simply returned me to the YouTube homepage.
It has to be said, there are easier ways to block YouTube ads in web browsers. Plugins such as Enhancer for YouTube, for example, allow you to remove ads at the click of an icon, as well as perform other handy tricks, such as change the playback speed or resize the video window.
It’s probably only a matter of time before this trick is disabled. With YouTube advertising already suffering in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Google won’t want to make it any easier for viewers to dodge income-generating ads.
