Water scarcity poses major threat to Bumbuli residents
By Dege Masoli
Over 500 households in Nkelei ‘B 'Village in Bumbuli constituency in Tanga Region experience regular disease outbreaks because of using unclean and unsafe water from wells.
Speaking to The Guardian in separate interviews some of the villagers said unclean and unsafe water was a major threat to their health.
They claimed they were experiencing regular health problems, while others died of cholera and typhoid because of using unsafe water. They also blamed the district authorities and the government for lack of seriousness in addressing the problems facing people such as lack of health services and a modern market for their crops.
Nkelei ‘B' chairman William Mdimu said the problem was serious and over 500 households were in danger of being infected with diseases because of using dirty water. Mdimu explained that besides the water being unsafe, it was also not enough and people were forced to walk long distances in search of it, which affected their economic activities.
"Scarcity of water is an obstacle to development in the village because people spend about three quarters of the day searching for it. Sometimes, women wake up around midnight to look for drinking water, which is dangerous to them," he said.
He explained that the village leadership was working hard to address the water problem and it had already presented recommendations to the Lushoto District council so that it could look into possibilities of using the Ngwero water source, which also supplies water to Nkaloi Village and other areas.
