Total passenger traffic increased by 3.4 per cent from 11.7 million in 2018 to 12.1 million in 2019. Domestic passengers handled increased by 2.1 per cent from 4.8 million in 2018 to 4.9 million in 2019. International passengers increased by 4.3 per cent from 6.9 million in 2018 to 7.2 million in 2019.
International passenger arrivals increased by 2.9 per cent from 3.4 million passengers in 2018 to 3.5 million passengers while international departures increased by 4.8 per cent from 2.1 million in 2018 to 2.2 million in 2019. Passengers on transit increased by per cent from 1.5 million in 2018 to 1.6 million in 2019.
13.23. The volume of passenger traffic handled at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport ( JKIA) increased by 3.7 per cent from 8.0 million in 2018 to 8.3 million in 2019. The increase in the number of passengers handled at JKIA is partly explained by introduction of new routes and business related travel mostly to the Far East countries such as JKIA-Geneva and JKIA-New York.
The number of passengers handled at Moi International Airport (MIA) increased by 7.1 per cent from 1.4 million in 2018 to 1.5 million in 2019. This was occasioned by the rise in the number of chartered flights from Europe to the Kenyan Coast and an increase in tourism related activities during the review period.
