Joachim Kamere, who was to vie for the Gatundu South seat, has withdrawn from the race saying he will not antagonise TNA party in his home turf.

The Nairobi advocate, from the New Democrats Party, on Friday said his decision was informed by the nature of politics in his constituency.

“Political contests can be acrimonious and can cause huge rifts and polarisation in the community.

UNNECESSARY TENSION

“Gatundu South is the home of our beloved President Uhuru Kenyatta. I do not wish to be the cause, or be associated with political divisions and unnecessary tensions in the President’s backyard,” he said.

Mr Kamere however noted that he would continue to work on initiatives to serve the constituents despite not being a member of Parliament.

“I am sure my friends and supporters will feel disappointed and let down. But it is important sometimes to step away from the tree in front of you in order to behold the forest.

BACKING OF EX-MP'S WIDOW

“Gatundu South must give the President peace of mind for him to focus on the onerous task of serving the people of Kenya,” he added.

On July 10, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission cleared both Mr Kamere and Mr Moses Kuria (TNA) to contest for the seat where they expressed their optimism in winning the race.

The two candidates claimed to have backing of Mrs Joyce Ngugi --widow of former MP Joseph Ngugi -- who was trounced by Mr Kuria during the party nominations. (READ: Widow of former MP exits Gatundu South by-election)
