Consolidate gain of JKIA attaining Category One status

Kenya’s long journey to attain a Category One status for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport has finally ended. Whereas this calls for celebration, it also means that a new challenge has now emerged. Kenya must now race to meet the other technical compliance requirements so that businesses and private citizens alike can enjoy the benefits that come with direct flights to the United States (US).

Kenyan exporters, especially those that sell horticultural produce, now have an opportunity to leverage on this new development to bypass middlemen in Europe and sell their produce directly to the American market. It also means that others involved in manufacturing, especially of garments, can now enjoy easier access to the American market. This should serve to expand the economic and employment opportunities by taking advantage of the many concessions offered under the Africa Growth and Opportunities Act to improve Kenya’s balance of trade. It is also an opportunity for the hospitality industry to more aggressively market itself in the US to attract more visitors to the country.

Kenyans expect that the national carrier, Kenya Airways, which has faced three tough years due to leadership and financial crises, can now rise to the occasion and take advantage of this new window of opportunity to expand its reach and improve its fortunes by acting as a connection between Africa and America. This will call for innovation on its part and a rethinking of its business model to ensure that it performs better than its rivals who already enjoy direct flights to the US.

Whereas the opportunities the new categorisation offers are immense and its benefits potentially far-reaching, the government ought to do much more to improve security and vigilance in the capital, expand the airport and ensure compliance with international aviation standards. This is the only way to ensure that the gains the country has made are not rolled back. The ball is now in the court of the security and aviation authorities to consolidate this gain for the Kenyan people.

Kenyan airlines prepare for direct flights to US post JKIA’s successful audit clearance

Mar 2, 2017: Kenyan airliners are expected to start making direct flights to the United States, after the US Federal Aviation Administration issued Kenya with a certificate of security and safety clearance Thursday.

The clearance follows a successful audit of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), the largest airport in Kenya, by the International Civil Aviation Organization to determine if it meets the necessary international standards.

The announcement was made by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Transport, James Macharia, who called on Kenya Airways, Kenya’s national carrier, to β€œimmediately apply for approval to codeshare with US airlines while concurrently pursuing approval for direct flights.”

Welcoming the safety clearance, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Treasury, Henry Rotich, said direct flights between Kenya and the United States will have a favorable impact on Kenya’s tourism and business sectors.

The Kenyan government has welcomed the security approval by the United States, saying it is a result of sustained cooperation between the two countries in many areas, such as security, exports, imports, and tourism.

For its part, Kenya Airways has welcomed the security clearance, saying it is ready to β€œimmediately” start flying passengers directly to the United States.

The airline’s outgoing CEO Mbuvi Ngunze said their priority is to pursue codeshare arrangements with their partners in the Skyteam Alliance to make sure they begin direct flights to the United States as soon as possible.

This announcement comes at a time when Kenya, a longtime ally of the United States, is uncertain about its future relations with the world’s most powerful nation under President Donald Trump’s administration.

Once the request to codeshare is approved, Kenya will join the small league of African countries, including South Africa, Ethiopia, Egypt, Ghana, and Cape Verde, which enjoy direct flights to the United States.

MK254 what are your thoughts on reviving the Greenfield terminal. I think the cancelation of the project was one of the greater blunders of the administration.

Cancellation of Greenfield terminal got me really riled and disappointed, I used to talk about it a lot. It was one project I always looked forward to, hope somehow will be revived someday in the future.
