Journalists from various media houses have planned peaceful protests in major towns on Thursday.

The demonstrations will be against the rising cases of violent attacks targeting scribes while executing their duties.

They will petition Parliament, DPP Keriako Tobiko and IG Joseph Boinnet.

The journalists want the senior state officials to brief them on the status of investigations into past cases of assault and murder meted on their colleagues.

David Owino, one of the organizers of the peaceful protest, said journalists in Nairobi will gather at Freedom Corner in Uhuru Park before proceeding to the DPP's office at the NSSF building at 9.30am.

The procession will then pass through Kenyatta Avenue, Moi Avenue and Harambee Avenue to Jogoo House, where Boinnet’s office is located.

"Attacks on journalists are uncalled for and must be stopped. Action must be taken to send a message that no one will attack a journalist and get away with it," Owino said.

"We want Tobiko and Boinnet to assure us that those involved in meting violence on journalists are brought to book to stop others from doing it," he said.

Members of the Fourth Estate in counties will also present petitions to regional and county security commanders.

"Security agencies, politicians and their supporters should refrain from intimidating journalists," Owino said.

The protests have been organised following the recent mysterious death of Kilifi-based Standard Group journalist Joseph Masha.

Masha collapsed and died at his home on Friday. His death, from suspected poisoning, was reported after a meeting with a senior politician from the region.

Few days after the Kilifi journalist died, reports emerged that two journalists from Royal Media Services and Nation Media Group were beaten in Murang'a county by Kakuzi guards .

Nation journalist Grace Gitau and her Standard counterpart Lydia Nyawira were allegedly assaulted by MCAs who did not want them to take photos at the county assembly.

Edward Wanyonyi of Scribes Kenya said cases involving Star reporter Joseph Ndunda, who was forced to delete photos of a violent confrontation between Nairobi county government Askarisand hawkers, must be resolved.

Nation Media Group’s Nehemia Okwemba and Citizen TV’s Reuben Ogachi were last year assaulted by General Service Unit (GSU) officers at Bombi, Galana Ranch in Tana River county.

"It is a very worrying trend. This is a clear indication that there has been no arrests despite evidence of such attacks being shared with the authorities," Wanyonyi said.
