Wenger vows to strengthen squad

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will splash out in the summer after conceding he needs to strengthen his squad.

Last week's defeat by Manchester United in the Champions League semi-final ended Arsenal's hopes of winning a trophy for the first time since 2005.

"Certainly we will try to strengthen the squad in the summer," said Wenger, who side lost 4-1 to Chelsea on Sunday.

"We'll look to sign one or two players. We are prepared to spend the necessary money to get the players we want."

Wenger has revealed he will look to bring in experienced players this summer, a stance backed by Alisher Usmanov, a major shareholder in the club who has expressed concern over the strength of the club's squad.

"At times it was a bit like men against boys," Usmanov, who owns 25% of the club's shares, said after the Champions League exit at the hands of the Red Devils.

"Does the club need to take a step up? Of course. To be first in the world, to be first in Europe, you must have a much stronger bench.

"Look at United on Tuesday night. They had at least £100m in talent sitting on the bench."

Wenger, who saw his side crash to a demoralising 4-1 defeat at home to Chelsea on Sunday, has put his faith in young players in recent seasons - but the policy has yet to pay dividends in terms of trophies.

Talented young players like Kieran Gibbs and Aaron Ramsey have been brought into the first team but the Gunners have been criticised for not signing more experienced players in the transfer market.

And Wenger's insistence that any player over the age of 30 should not be offered a deal longer than two years has resulted in the likes of Robert Pires and Gilberto Silva leaving the club.

Last summer Alexander Hleb and Matthieu Flamini also departed, with youngsters Samir Nasri, Aaron Ramsey and Amaury Bischoff moving to the Emirates, in addition to experienced defender Mikael Silvestre.

The arrival of Russian playmaker Andriy Arshavin in January for a reported fee of £15m was seen as a step in the right direction by many Gunners fans.

But Arsenal's failure to sustain a challenge in the Premier League and their semi-final exits in the Champions League and FA Cup have been used as evidence that Arsenal need to strengthen.

"The size of the player is not always linked with the size of the money you spend," added Wenger in his programme notes for Arsenal's game against Chelsea.

"Once we identify the player we want, we will spend the money we need to."

Arsenal have been linked with West Ham centre-back Matthew Upson, who left Arsenal in 2003, Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure - the younger brother of Arsenal defender Kolo - and Valencia striker David Villa.

The 4-1 aggregate defeat by Manchester United in the last four of the Champions League was a particularly bitter pill for Arsenal fans to swallow but Wenger insisted the two clubs are not as far apart as that result might suggest.

"People have come to the conclusion that there is a massive difference between us and Manchester United," he stated.

"I'm convinced there isn't. I remain confident that we can win silverware next season and that's why we will continue to work hard."

Arsenal manager defiant over team's potential

LONDON (AP) Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger defiantly defended the potential of his young team after two crushing home defeats, and expressed indifference to fans' mounting frustrations.

Wenger is the club's most successful manager and has enjoyed an overwhelming period of support from fans, even during the past four years when Arsenal hasn't won a trophy. But the tension has been mounting over the course of the season and was compounded by heavy home losses to Manchester United and Chelsea this past week.

Arsenal supporters streamed out of Emirates Stadium in the thousands with 30 minutes left to play in the Champions League semifinal second leg Tuesday after Manchester United went ahead 3-0 and eventually knocked the Gunners out of the tournament 4-1 on aggregate.

The fans again had seen enough Sunday during the 4-1 league defeat to Chelsea, with thousands of empty seats well before the final whistle and widespread booing.

Wenger response was curt and dismissive when asked after Sunday's loss what his message was to the fans, when it was suggested that their mass exodus Wednesday and Sunday meant they were hurting.

"Everybody is free to leave the stadium when he wants," he said without elaborating, pausing to wait for the next question.

At half time and as they made an early exit Sunday, many fans recognized former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn sitting in the press box giving commentary. Several half-jokingly yelled out to Winterburn, who was part of the team that won the double under Wenger in 1998, that he should get out onto the pitch to help the young squad.

Wenger has won three league championships and four FA Cups over his nearly 13-year tenure - the last being the FA Cup in 2005. Fans are yearning for a return of the glory days when Wenger brought trophies to the club and had solid defenders - Winterburn among them - and strikers who consistently hit the back of the net.

Wenger said he didn't think Arsenal "had a bad performance" Sunday and that it shouldn't have been a 4-1 game because of the number of chances Arsenal created - an opinion not shared by many fans and observers who witnessed shocking defensive errors and a continual succession of mis-hit shots.

There haven't been widespread demands that Wenger resign, but fans are calling for change on blogs, radio shows and most noticeably through their lack of support when the team is down. Notably, the once ubiquitous chant "There's Only One Arsene Wenger" hasn't been heard among fans with the same frequency in past seasons.

Wenger's undying loyalty to his vision for the club - developing a team of young players through Arsenal's system - is showing signs of cracking and he has suggested in the past few days that he may strengthen his squad over the summer. Wenger, who turns 60 in October, may be encouraged to go with experience after his winter purchase of Russia playmaker Andrei Arshavin paid immediate dividends.

But Wenger's stance appeared to revert to the status quo Sunday, saying he didn't yet know how much funds will be available this summer and remained defiant when asked if the squad required a major overhaul.

"No, I believe we need to continue to improve," he said. "Things are not as doom and gloom as everybody wants to make it after defeat ... We have to continue to improve in the areas where we feel it is right. It doesn't necessarily mean quantity (of players) and not even quantity of money, just the right players."
