As the world moves towards greener infrastructure, electric and hybrid cars have started gaining traction in Kenya – By Gerald Gekara.


Power generator KenGen has announced its investment on electric car charging systems to increase its revenue streams.

KenGen Strategy and Innovation Director David Muthike said Monday through a webinar that the firm is positioning itself to the possibilities of the rollout of electric public service vehicles.

“The case to have electric vehicles is there and KenGen is ready to support that with renewable energy,” said Mr Muthike in the webinar convened by Energy Society Kenya.

“On innovation, we are exploring to participate in manufacturing and we have also rolled out charging infrastructure with a pilot within our premises.”

Mr Muthike did not however give details on the location of the pilot vehicle charging infrastructure.

Currently, Finnish company Nopia Ride has set up shop in Nairobi. This paved way for Kenya’s first-ever eco-friendly shared mobility unit services.

Opibus, another startup led by Johanna Alander, Filip Lövström, Filip Gardler, Mikael Gånge, and Rawlings Nechevava began processes to introduce electric matatus, after successfully introducing fully electric tour vans.


However, with all these innovations, the first challenge was to tackle the availability of charging stations.

In Nairobi, Two Rivers Mall located along Kiambu Road, the Hub in Karen, and Thika Road Mall contain Kenya’s main charging stations, with other remote stations at Opibus garage.

Alafu kwa miaka kumi ya kwanza una subsidize garama ya umeme ya ku charge gari ili kuvutia wanunuzi wa electric car kama vile Elon musk alifanya na kampuni ya Tesla wakati flani, ilikua ukinunua electric car ya Tesla ku charge ni bure!!!! Hebu imagine, kununua gari alafu baada ya hapo hakuna garama ya mafuta/umeme kwa kama miaka mitatu ya kwanza!!!

Tukifanya hivyo in 15 years time itakua tumepunguza sana utegemeo wetu wa ku import mafuta kutoka nje, badala yake tutakua tunatumia hela hizo kufaidisha akina Kengen, na muhimu zaidi itakua hizo pesa haziendi nje zinabaki hapa hapa nchini.

Nadharia za ugaibuni haziwezi tekelezwa Africa. Gari la electric lazima ulinunue likiwa mpya( ksh 4m- 7m), ukiweka sheria eti magari ya serikali yawe electric:
1) Hayo ni idadi ndogo sana, kupoteza pesa za umma kujenga charging station na raiya hawana maji Nairobi.

2)Serikali inatumia mafuta Tax- free..Lita Moja ya petroli ni 60/- raiya wakinunua 100/- Umeme wa kujaza gari la 60kwh ni 60x 10bob per kWh = 600.. Huo umeme unakupeleka 50 km pekee, mafuta ya Mia sita kwa bei ya serikali ukitumia gari la vvti tech 16,kpl x 6 = 96km

3) Waste of time..the wastage in government can be solved by prosecuting corruption more than having an " electric" fleet
