KeNHA Moves to Change Construction Time of Elevated Road in Nairobi

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is seeking to amend the construction times of the planned elevated traffic interchange at the current Lang'ata Road-Mbagathi Way junction referred to as the T-Mall Flyover.

In a questionnaire to residents living in estates neighbouring the project dated February 15, the government agency stated that increasing the working hours would fast track the construction of the flyover.

"KeNHA proposes the extension of working hours from the currently approved construction hours of 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays and 8 am - 1 pm on Saturdays, to overnight working and transportation of materials," the notice reads in part.

The roads agency explained that the changes would speed up construction works and reduce the inconvenience to motorists and the general public from the works.

KeNHA is seeking a variation of the existing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) licence condition on working time.

In order to consider and approve the application for an extension of working hours the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has requested that immediate neighbours near the project site be consulted on the proposal.


The agency has circulated questionnaires to residents neighbouring the project to get their views on the proposal to change the working hours.

When completed, the flyover will allow vehicles heading to Ongata Rongai and Magadi to pass over an elevated road to the Shell Petrol Station next to the Wilson Airport.

Vehicles heading to Mbagathi Road, South C, Wilson Airport will use the underpass in a move that will terminate traffic jams at the busy Langata Road.

The Project is conceptualized under the Public-Private Partnership between the Government of Kenya and the Government of the Kingdom of Spain.

Other projects within Nairobi have taken the overnight working to complete construction works faster. Contractors working on the Nairobi Expressway have taken to work day and night to have it completed.

• During an inspection tour in February 2021, Transport CS Macharia stated that Nairobi Expressway project was currently 20% complete with an expected completion date of December 2021.
  The NMS also undertook night construction in 2020 when it embarked on the recarpeting and rehabilitation of the roads in different parts of the city.
