Over 95 local manufacturers have been trained on quality development of PPEs by McKinsey & Company, with funding support from the UK Department for International Development (DFID), as part of a partnership with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Enterprise Development (MoITED).
The manufacturers were educated on how to meet national standards (MOH and Kenya Bureau of Standards) and international quality standards (British Standards, European Standards) in production of PPEs and in the creation of efficient supply chains.
Kenya Association Of Manufacturers is now forming regional supply chains to supply quality and affordable PPEs to comesa, eac countries. Already south africa is a client having received multiple consignments of essential PPEs from Kenya.
The UK is also looking to import PPEs from Kenyan manufacturers and America through AGOA is also in talks with Kenyan manufacturers to supply it with the essential medical equipment. Further expansion will see Kenya become the largest manufacturer of PPEs in Africa.
“By creating a strong local manufacturing capacity in the country, we will be guaranteeing a steady supply of PPEs and hedge against global supply chain disruptions while also supporting the national economy.” Dr. Mwangi is the Managing Director and CEO of Equity Group Holdings and Executive Chairman of Equity Group Foundation (EGF).
Prof Isaac Macharia applauded local manufacturers for their quick turnaround time for producing PPEs that meet local and international standards for health care workers.
The Kenya Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund has released financial resources amounting to more than Kshs 1 billion this far for the local procurement of Full kit PPEs, protective goggles, gowns, examination gloves, surgical and respirator masks. The funds have also been earmarked to purchase Face shields, headcovers and medical footwear."
The PPEs currently locally manufactured in Kenya are surgical masks, N95 respirator masks, Face shields, Cover gowns,medical footwear,, protective goggles, latex surgical and examination gloves.
