Gov't of Kenya weary by mounting costs of Operation Linda Nchi

'Untold suffering'
The decision to join Somalia's African Union Force is probably also linked to government concerns about the rising cost of military operations in Somalia, our reporter says.

Kenya would now expect its operation to be financed by the AU or United Nations, he says.

The AU force in Somalia operates under a UN Security Council mandate.

Somalia's President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed - a moderate Islamist - initially opposed Kenya's intervention, but later supported it, correspondents say.

Last week, the AU Peace and Security Council said it had formally asked Kenya to join the AU operation in Somalia.

Kenyan military action in south-central Somalia - along with gains made by AU forces in Mogadishu - created an opportunity to end the "untold suffering" of Somalis, it said.

It also welcomed Ethiopia's decision to support the AU-Kenyan military campaign in Somalia, the council said.

Why Kenya is not making any strides in the war against Al Shabaab two months into incursion

The Kenyan Defence Forces in Somalia have not made any significant territorial progress over the past one month, but the military publicity department is not ready to reveal that they have stalled because of factors beyond their control - a situation that has left Nairobi rethinking its approach to the incursion against the Al Shabaab militia.

The force on the southern front that entered Somalia through Kiunga is stuck in Burgabo, 60km from the Kenyan border, where they will have to cross a deep creek. The only advance being realised is on the central front, that recently took Bilis Qooqaani and is preparing to take Afmadow. The two teams are eventually meant to meet in Kismayu.

Investigations by The East-African have revealed that a number of logistical and political issues have forced the KDF to go slow contrary to the initial plan for a swift operation.

There are four major factors that have bogged down the military campaign. They are: Lack of finances to run a long-drawn war; the differences between interested parties over whether to divide Somalia into autonomous regions or maintain one united country; differences over the option to engage Al Shabaab in a political dialogue, and the ambivalence of Somalia's President Sheikh Shariff Ahmed.

Already, the Kenya public and the politicians have started questioning whether the Kenyan involvement in Somalia is likely to last longer than was initially intended.

My take: The cracks on the wall are getting wider!

With a light touch (as the late Adam Lusekelo used to put it):

This is how Al-Shabaab now sees the Kenyan army, KDF!

Twin blasts hit Kenyan forces in north

11.12.2011
GARISSA, Kenya - Twin blasts killed one police officer and wounded nine soldiers in northern Kenya on Sunday, local officials said, in the latest in a string of attacks since Kenyan troops crossed the border into Somalia two months ago.

One police officer was killed and three were wounded by an explosion in the Kenyan town of Mandera, on the border with Somalia, said district commissioner Benson Leparamorijo.

In a separate incident, nine soldiers were wounded as they moved between Wajir and Mandera, said Wajir district commissioner Kennedy Nyaiyo.

It was not yet clear who was responsible for Sunday's explosions. The incidents are the latest in a string of attacks against the military and other targets in Kenya since the Kenyan government sent troops into Somalia in October.

Explosion hits Kenyan Independence Day celebration
GARISSA, Kenya (AP) - An eyewitness says an explosion wounded several people at a stadium in the northern Kenyan town of Wajir during celebrations of Kenya's Independence Day.

Abdirahman Abdi says government vehicles were leaving the stadium when a device exploded under one of the cars carrying intelligence officers. He says several people were wounded but it was unclear how badly. The vehicles were in the stadium as part of a parade for Monday's celebration of 48 years of independence from British rule.

The explosion is the third attack on Kenyan security forces within two days. There has been a string of bombings in Kenya since the Kenyan government sent troops across the border into Somalia in October.

Operation Linda Nchi

The number of casualties is on the rise
The number of casualties is on the rise as Kenya-backed Transitional Federal Government troops and al Shabaab militias battle for control of large swathes of lawless Somalia.

The Garissa District Hospital has admitted 128 injured TFG solders since Operation Linda Nchi was launched in mid October.

Because of the rising numbers, Kenya Army doctors have fashioned out a wing at the district hospital for the foreign soldiers injured in Somalia.

The separate and isolated wing has been established to shield the men from public view because many in Garissa are not comfortable with the high security mounted at the hospital by the army in and outside the hospital.

Over 54 TFG soldiers were injured during the deadly one-on-one fight on Monday while over 30 al Shabaab fighters were injured in the clash and taken to Mareray and Afmadhow hospitals for treatment.

Multiple sources confirmed the soldiers have, mainly, gunshot wounds and burns from explosives. "These people came to the hospital in very bad conditions from bullet wounds, burns and deep head cuts, injuries consistent with a situation of fierce gun fighting, use of explosives and other weapons between the TFG solders and the al Shabaab," one of the sources said.

Critically injured troops are flown to Mombasa or Nairobi for special care. According to the Kenyan military spokesman Emmanuel Chirchir, out of the 54 injured TFG soldiers, .............................................................

Jamhuri Day speech

President urges Somalis to restore lasting peace

President Kibaki has asked the people of Somalia to take advantage of the operation against Al-Shabaab to establish long-term stability in their country.

President Kibaki asked the Somalis to reclaim their country and speak out against the fundamentalist militia group that has controlled much of southern Somalia since 2006.

"The people of Somalia scattered all over the world must take a collective position and reject those behind the problems in their country," President Kibaki said in his Jamhuri Day speech.

"Kenya stands ready to walk this journey with the people and Government of Somalia that will see the dawn of a bright day of hope for them," he added.

The President was speaking at Nyayo Stadium during celebrations to mark 48 years since Kenya gained independence.

There were also special prayers for the KDF and the success of the operation against Al-Shabaab. (READ: Police launch crackdown following explosions in northern Kenya)

Kenyan forces pledge further push into Somalia
By KATHARINE HOURELD, Associated Press

RAS KAMBONI, Somalia (AP) — Kenyan troops and their Somali allies said Tuesday they will push deeper into insurgent-controlled territory in Somalia now that rains have stopped, as the U.N. called for $1.5 billion in aid for those hit by famine in the Horn of Africa nation.

Mohamed Ibrahim Farah, a spokesman for a Kenyan-allied Somali militia at Somalia's southern tip, said troops would move soon, by the end of the year.

"We are going forward within this week," he said as he addressed foreign journalists in a ramshackle hut of twigs and corrugated iron that served as the militia headquarters. "There was a lot of problems with the rain. There's a lot of places with the water there is no place to cross."
