The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board has de-registered 2,063 medical practitioners and 212 dental practitioners.
The Kenyan doctors drawn from both the public and private health sector allegedly failed to comply with Section 14 of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act.
Section 14 refers to Section 13 that states: “Every such licence shall be for such period and may contain such conditions as the Director of Medical Services shall, with the consent or on the instruction of the Board, impose.”
Doctors are required to pay an annual retention fee of Ksh.4,000.
The latest move comes after the Board resolved to remove non- compliant practitioners from the register following a meeting that was held on March 29 this year.
According to the Board, the public can access the list of de-registered doctors and dentists on its website.
Medics who were struck out and want to be re-instated have been told to re-apply for their annual retention via the same website.
Kenyan doctors are expected to have a license from the Board for them to offer treatment to patients or run medical facilities.
There has been an upsurge of quack doctors in the health industry with the Board citing 22 cases pending in court.
The most recent case was of Mugo Wa Wairimu who was detained in police custody in November last year.
He had been arrested at Utalii Street in Nairobi for operating a clinic without the required credentials.
Another suspected fake doctor, who had been working as medical superintendent in Nandi County, was arraigned in court in November 2016.
