Nairobi - A prominent local analyst cautioned against alleged moves by the Uhuru Kenyatta-led administration to change the country’s policies based on current tensions with the West.

The warnings come amid the president arriving in Kuwait and joining 65 other leaders from Africa and the Arab world for the third Africa Arab Economic Summit.

The event coincided with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Sri Lanka.

This was the first time an elected Kenyan President skipped the Commonwealth summit since independence in 1963.

This has raised eyebrows with pundits reading a slow but steady shift of loyalty from the Western countries to those of the East.

“We now can say that we have genuine, legitimate, consistent friends,” Kenyatta was quoted as saying after arriving in Kuwait.

He was expected to hold bilateral talks with the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

President Kenyatta has been fostering links with the East much to the alleged discomfort of the Western countries.

“That has been one of the points of contentions with the west, that the west tries to intimidate Africans not to open up to other countries,” added political analyst, Prof. Macharia Munene.

The president’s visit to the east comes a few days after the United Nations Security Council turned down a request by the African Union to have the International criminal Court cases he and his Deputy, William Ruto, are facing deferred for a year.

Jubilee Party allied leaders reacted angrily to the collapsed bid of the deferral effort.

The pair is facing charges of crimes against humanity arising from the violent 2007/08 election.

Kuwait is also part of the East? I thought the East in this sense referred to Such Countries as China and Russia. If my memory serves me right, Kuwait is also an important ally of the West. I think Uhuru is merely expanding the country's business interests. Let's not read too much politics in this. Uhuru is not the only African leader attending this meeting.

Strange days! While Tanzania under the Julius Nyerere administration used to be the number one and a staunch ally of both China and Russia, Kenya used to be a darling of the west particularly US and UK.
Everybody in the region used to laugh at Tanzania for a fact that we were leaning towards the east and became a foe to the west. Indeed, there are permanent interests but not permanent allies.

South Africa had long maintained relatively cordial relations with Kenya, one of Africa's leading pro-Western governments, although until 1990 these ties were mostly unpublicized and centered around trade. The nature of their relations changed in November 1990 when South Africa's minister of foreign affairs, Pik Botha, visited Kenya in the first publicized ministerial-level contact between the two countries since 1960. Relations were further consolidated when President de Klerk visited Kenya in June 1991, and Kenyan president Daniel Arap Moi visited Cape Town in June 1992--the first visit to South Africa by an African head of state.
