A number of musicians have, at one time, sang their hearts out about my town Siaya. A typical example is Musa Juma with his hit song "Siaya Kababa". The track is the pride of many in Siaya County. Both the young and the old are often seen doing a jig every time the track is played.

Siaya is a county of many firsts. It produced the first Vice-President of Kenya Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. He is well-known for having championed multi-party democracy. Siaya also prides itself in having links with Mr. Barack Obama, the first black American president. His father hailed from Kogelo, the once dusty and sleepy village in Siaya County. Due to this background, the village is now the envy of many both black and white.

We take a drive to Mama Sarah Obama's home, and the old woman, who looked after President Obama's father at a tender age, leaves us in stitches. The president's grandmother is a prolific storyteller. She amused us when she told us about how men used to elope with teenage girls.

My town has numerous beaches on Lake Victoria. One of them is Usenge. This is the largest tropical trans-boundary freshwater lake in the world. Waters from rivers such as Yala and Nzoia drain into the lake. Yala Swamp, a vast wetland, forms the mouths of the two rivers.

Home of "brainy" men: Back in the day, if you hailed from Siaya, women would swarm around you as it was regarded the home of "brainy" men. It has lived up to this tag as it has produced many academics. The scholars include Prof W.R. Ochieng', who was a historian and a literary critic; Prof Thomas Odhiambo, who founded the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology; Prof George Magoha, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nairobi; Prof Bethwel Ogot and Prof PLO Lumumba.

The devolved unit also has some of the best-performing educational institutions in the country. They include Maranda High School (top nationally, 2011); St Mary's School, Yala; and Ng'iya Girls' High School.

Siaya made another first in the 7th Parliament as it had a father (Jaramogi Odinga) and his son (Mr. Raila Odinga) as members, representing Bondo and Langata constituencies, respectively. lawmaina78 leo nimeamua kufanya "virtual tour" mpaka Siaya County. Ingawa mwandishi amesifia sana kuhusu kwao, bado nimevutiwa sana na historia aliyoiandika kuhusu eneo hilo. Halafu kumbe kuna beach inaitwa "Usenge"!? LOL
