Kenya has learnt a lot of lessons about trade. This time Kenya is going alone into a trade agreement with United states of America, a move that has angered her african partners in east africa and the African free trade agreement.

Question is, should Kenya care about what other african countries think, given that our neighbors sabotaged the talks with the european union with an aim of cutting Kenya short?

From this past experience Kenya has learnt a lesson and decided to go it alone in talks with the United states. A move that has been highly welcomed by AmCham (America Chamber of commerce).

The trade deal will contain tax free exchange of goods and services between america and Kenya, right now Kenya exports about $400 million worth of goods to the United states via Agoa agreement but Agoa will expire in 2025.

Kenya is not willing to loose this valuable market due to insecurities by it's neighbors as it happened with the european union negotiations.

Best of lucky to you our neighbors, it is not a must that we have common approaches in spite that we belong to the same community. I believe that our representatives have major reasons akin to avoiding/ delaying such moves for the betterment of us and future generations.

Right now, how much worth does US exports to Kenya, via Agoa agreement?

It is quite easy to verify, just using google. The trade deal will expand this trade from $ 1 billion to around $4 billion annually with america looking to export wheat from pacific northwest to plug the deficit in kenya. The kenyan wheat market is worth around $500 million annually, with huge deficits since the demand is high for wheat.
Kenya produces about 400,000 tonnes of wheat but the demand is now at 950,000 tonnes.America will plug this deficit with cheaper wheat which will mean we will not import a lot from the african countries but it will also mean Kenyan wheat products will become cheaper and more competitive in the market.

The trade deal also includes but not limited to:-
a) incubation for kenyan farmers by american firms to bring up productivity in agriculture especially in wheat ,soya bean farming and Beef cattle rearing.
b) Technology lessons and funding for kenyan technology startups
c) Full tariff free access to the american market for about 6000 value added kenyan products.
