Kenya is one of the biggest contributors to the United Nations (UN) according to statistics in a recently released report by the global body.

According to the report, Kenya donated $445 million (Sh45 billion) towards procurement of goods and services for operational activities of the UN system.

Which made Kenya the tenth biggest contributor in the world. The organisation procured goods and services from 224 different countries and territories in 2015 with 124 of them providing $10 million or more each.

The top 10 countries supplying the UN system accounted for 44.8 percent of its total procurement volume ($7.9 billion) in 2015.

Contributions for 2015 reached $17.6 billion which was a considerable increase on $13.8 billion back in 2009.

Kenya with 2.5% provides cargo transportation services, construction services and fuel.

GOODS AND SERVICES

The United States was the UN’s largest contributor last year, accounting for 9.37 percent of its procurement volume with contributions amounting to over $1.6 billion.

India has been one of the ten highest contributors since 2000 and it was in second place last year, supplying goods and services worth $1.28 billion. The United Arab Emirates came third with $805 million, ahead of Switzerland and Belgium.

Kenya is the only third world country to be ranked as one of the biggest contributors to the World organising body and the only African country.

The goods and services are part of the voluntary contributions made by the member countries to the UN. These are usually not used in to fund core UN activities.

The various goods and services supplied to UN are procured for use in its various special programs, including UNDP, UNOPS, the World Food Program (WFP), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UNICEF, and the Pan American Health Organization.

The figures reported were compiled from information gathered from 36 United Nations organisations in total.
