Juma, born on June 9, 1953, died on Friday barely a week after his mother was buried.

He is one of Kenya's foremost recognised professors and was also the first African Science and Environmental journalists at the Daily Nation newspaper.

According to Wikipedia, Prof Juma is an internationally recognised authority in the application of science and technology to sustainable development worldwide.

He was named one of the most influential 100 Africans in 2012, 2013 and 2014 by the New African magazine.

He was the professor of the practice of International Development and faculty chair of the Innovation for Economic Development Executive Program at Harvard Kennedy School.

Juma was also director of the school's Science, Technology and Globalisation project as well as the Agricultural Innovation in Africa Project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

His latest book, The New Harvest: Agricultural Innovation in Africa was published by Oxford University Press between 2011-13

In recognition of his work, Juma was elected to the Royal Society of London, the US National Academy of Sciences, The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, the African Academy of Sciences and the New York Academy of Sciences.

Wikipedia says Juma grew up on the Kenyan shores of Lake Victoria where he obtained early education.

He first worked as an elementary school teacher before his stint at the Daily Nation newspaper.

Juma later joined the Nairobi-based Environment Liaison Centre International as a founder and editor of trilingual quarterly magazine, Ecoforum.

This was before he received an MSc in Science, Technology and Industrialisation and a DPhil in Science and Technology Policy from the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex.

He has written widely on science, technology and sustainable development.

RIP professor but it would have been great if you could be working in your place of origin for the effective impaction of the knowledge you had in fostering wellbeing at home and equipping other young Kenyans to continue with what you had.

Dah..hiyo quote yake poa "Everything around us constantly changes and so creative options for adapting to this change become the only guarantee we have for a meaningful existence"
RIP Prof

RIP Calestous, I had an honour of meeting him once, and he even gave me his business card!

Though I was never fond of his ‘love’ and advocacy for GMOs in Africa, but he will forever be one of the best brains from the motherland!

Amina.

Pengine hufahamu nini Calestous alikuwa anafanya. He had a continental wide impact!

RIP Prof.

Ulishawahi kufanya practical research au thesis yoyote? Unajua role ya uwepo wa supervisor wako on your stage-by-stage project progression period? Am talking about the real basic sense thesis sio hizi za HKL you are dealing with Google and papers.

Hata huelewi ulichokiandika!

You can’t avoid “dealing with Google and papers” when doing scientific research no matter the field.

And what is this thing called “the real basic sense thesis”?

Narudia tena, upo very outdated. Katika graduate level, you don’t need to have a supervisor physically around you throughout! Unless you aren’t qualified enough. If you were well trained at BSc. and/or MSc. level(s), then you are qualified to undertake individual research/lab projects. You can use ICTs to get advised by your Professor whenever it is necessary.

You actually need day-to-day supervision when you are an undergrad!

Bruv, siyo vizuri ku-belittle mtu kama humfahamu. Ingawa sikuwa nikipenda namna Calestous alivyokuwa aki-push GMO agenda ndani ya Afrika, but he mentored and inspired a lot of young Africans in many ways.

May his soul rest in peace. Amen

He was the whole world's intellect. No small feat. Respect. R.I.P Prof.

You are speaking like a feeble-minded person. Good for you thank you.
