Hull City players on August 13, 2016 took to the field donning shirts emblazoned with the name and logo of their new sponsor, Kenya's sports betting firm SportPesa, on their shirts as they kicked off the 2016/2017 football season. PHOTO | HULL CITY TWITTER

A Kenyan brand on Saturday took its place at the English Premier League as Hull City kicked off its season against champions Leicester City.

SportPesa, the digital sport betting firm based in Nairobi, featured prominently during the season opening match.

The hashtag, #SportpesaHullCity, trended for the better part Saturday as Kenyans voiced their opinions on the firm's move to sponsor a team in one of the most recognisable leagues in the world.

SportsPesa is the first Kenyan company to sponsor an English soccer club after it signed a three-year deal with the club.

On Saturday, the firm's name and logo appeared prominently on Hull City's home shirts and will do so, both for home and away games, for the next three football seasons.

"The new sponsorship deal is the most lucrative in the Club’s proud 112-year history," read a statement on the Tigers website.

During the announcement of the sponsorship deal in July this year, SportPesa Chief Executive Officer Ronald Karauri said: “This is a big milestone for SportPesa as it marks the scaling of a Kenyan brand into the global market.

In addition to sponsoring the newly promoted EPL side, SportPesa is also the official Arsenal betting partner.

Not impressed.
There's an urgent need to regulate this betting industry mazee. Too many pipo are losing their hard earned cash daily, some have ended up commiting suicide. Homes have been broken and relationships ruined, thanks to this betting craze.

Ati in a span of just 4yrs, these guys are this rich, even sponsoring an English football team.....with money made from the poor Kenyans!
Some kids sleep hungry at night cos dad spent up all the money on bets...

Those people deliberately use their cash in betting. None forced them.

Governments need to maximize tax in this betting industry,
Hawa jamaa wanapiga pesa za maskini kirahisi sana..

The govt should surely do something to save this society from itself. Kenya is a society driven by greed for money, that is no secret.
This disease called gambling, just like alcoholism is spreading fast, at an alarming rate. It surely must be contained. At this rate the govt just cant afford to sit back and do nothing to stem this growing scourge.

Bavaria, pretend for once u are the president of a country, and u are confronted almost daily with such disturbing news in your country:

I cant exhaust the stories, they are sooo many. U can search for more by yourself.
But what would go thru ur mind as the leader of this country? Arent your pipo headed for destruction? Isnt your country slowly turning into a casino economy?

Though I agree with u that these pipo are engaging in this out of their own volition, but lives are been ruined. The dangers they are putting themselves into have be contained before its too late.

Two weeks ago, a janitor at my place of work desperately begged me to lend him sh.2000 ati sijui mtoto amefanyika nini shule, only to overhear that he confided to his friends that he spends btwn 500 and 1000 betting.....daily!
A mere toilet cleaner (na sisemi kwa ubaya) can afford to spend that much daily on betting......how? From where does he get that money? What does his family eat? (Next week, I will not tolerate his excuses, I want my money back).

no one forces You to place a bet..... muache udu bana
But lives are been ruined. I am not suggesting in any way that they should be stopped. I believe that they are perfectly legitimate businesses, lakini they need to be regulated a little bit, to protect that (foolish) mwananchi.

Fast of all, apart from enabling (a few) pipo gain quick riches, how else do these betting firms help the society? How many pipo have been employed by sportspesa for example example? (Safcom has thousands in its payroll). Any CSR attributed to them in Kenya?

People who want to ruin their lives will find a way to ruin their lives no matter what. Most drugs are banned yet people still ruin their lives. Stop being another Geza Ulole - the headlines you post happen in all countries. I personally know many people who bet and they're in no way close to people with a ruined life.

Geza Ulole has nothing to do with the issue at hand. Do u then all prefer that nothing should be done to at least control this industry? Doesnt it concern u that this trend amongst Kenyans is a little unhealthy?

Sumbody blowing up their entire month salary........

You sound like him criticizing something just because it's Kenyan.

What do you want the government to do? Ban betting? Obviously the government cannot tame how much someone bets. This is a purely personal choice and like I told you someone who spends all his income on betting will find a way to waste his life even if betting was banned.

Really, NairobiWalker? I'm I critical of this stuff cos its Kenyan?
And u really think that these pipo are wilfully bent on ruining the lives, like if u take away the alcohol, they go take a swim in a crocodile infested river. Ur being absurd!

I am quite amazed by all u, your total lack of empathy for these pipo, who hav ruined their lives to the point of even taking their lives. Their languishing families. Ati nobody made them to indulge in gambling.....SMH

First rule of the game that any gambler must always know is,..."The house always wins!"Sportpesa is in biznez, making a big profit because no matter how much money it gives out in winnings, its always wins! When an individual is making a single bet,Sportpesa is gambling smarter, since it has so many 'subscribers' it surely would not lose out on capturing a fraction, even if just a fraction of its 'subscribers' money! The one time bet guy is irrellevant, the guy who keeps coming back is the key to large profits thats why he even gets incentives to bet more like 'free money' to bet with! There comes the addiction to betting, not cool, not cool at all!

Iconoclastes anyone who chooses to pick up a habit has to find a way to keep his head up. Betting just like smoking, drinking and use of other drugs has to be put on check by the user. If you speak of regualtion, what do you want the government to do? Secondly you talk of absence of benefit to society, you are wrong. Sportpesa sponsors AFC, Gor and KPL. These in turn employe most of the youth passionate about football in one way or the other. Finally, whatever happens out of gambling is mostly a choice. To gamble all your hard earned monthly income is a personal decision and whoever makes such a decision was definitely probably going to throw away that cash into something as stupid (eg. booz and K street) . How is government regulation supposed to help that person?

Well I also know of some people who smoke weed and "they are in no way close to people with a ruined life" but smoking weed is still illegal.....

so what's your point?
Read Nairobi Walker's post, read my reply, if you dont get my point after that, please let me know and I will gladly elaborate. Thanks in advance.
