Kenyan government bans opposition demonstrations against IEBC commissioners
The Kenyan government has now issued an order banning any demonstrations against commissioners of the independent electoral and boundaries commission.
Interior cabinet secretary Joseph Nkaissery and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet banned what they called unlawful demonstrations on grounds that the protestors have failed to comply with the law, leading to the loss of lives, injuries and destruction of property.
But in a quick rejoinder, the opposition coalition cord questioned the laws that the government was using to ban the demonstrations and declared they would now be having the protests twice a week.
Interior cabinet secretary Mr Nkaissery ordered the Inspector-General of Police to ensure the enforcement of the order to protect the country from tension, destruction of property and loss of lives. The minister claimed that “over 1,000” stones were hurled at Kondele Police Station, forcing the officers to react. He said the protests in Kisumu, Migori, Siaya and Homa Bay counties on Monday resulted in two deaths and 50 injuries, including of 32 policemen.
The CS further said malicious destruction was carried out on two supermarkets, several vehicles burnt and many shops looted. Hotels have also complained of cancellations of bookings due to insecurity.
Said Mr Nkaissery: “Clearly, these demonstrations are not within the parameters set out by the constitutional court at the behest of Cord.”
