Area administration police (municipal police) commandant Francis Mwangi in a brief said they suspected the bhang originated from Tanzania as some of the packaging materials had labels indicating they were from the neighbouring country.

"We received a tip-off from the public and one volunteered to work with our officers and led them to a house suspected to be a store where the suspect stores bhang. We recovered three bags with other packaging materials which indicated the narcotic originated from Tanzania," said Mwangi.

Effort to reach the Rorya/Tarime Special Zone Police Commander Henry Mwaibambe proved futile yesterday as his bodyguard said the commander was attending a burial ceremony for the mother of a deputy minister.

The Nakuru AP commandant said they have leads that will lead to the arrest of the owner of the consignment.

Among the items recovered from the house was a chaff cutter used in the cutting the raw product to small pieces before being rolled ready for the market.

A music system was also recovered, Mwangi said, noting that police had arrested one man suspected to be a worker at the house and were interrogating him.

A milling machine used to grind the substance and Tanzanian branded wrappers were also recovered from the store.

“After researching we have established that a single pack costs Sh50 and therefore the whole quantity could cost more than Sh3 million (about 65m/-),” he said.

While thanking members of the public for volunteering information to the police, Mwangi said that the officers will intensify patrols in order to curb crime in the area.

He said it is suspected that the bhang is sold to the locals and residents of Nakuru town after being processed inside the isolated store.

“It is impressing to note that members of the public are embracing community policing,” he said.
He said that the suspect who is in police custody will be charged once they finalise investigations.

In February this year, the Drugs Control and Enforcement Authority (DCEA) said its officers had seized huge quantities of bhang in Mara, Lindi, Songwe, Singida and Morogoro regions.

The DCEA swooped on the four regions considered hotspots of the illicit trade in drugs as the anti-narcotics war spread across the country.

The authority said 40 hectares of bhang were destroyed in Simiyu, 36 hectares in the Tarime/Rorya police special zone, 15 hectares in Kagera, and half a hectare in Njombe and Kigoma.

“Apparently, the major problem facing the country is the cultivation of cannabis and marijuana, but with full cooperation from regional and local government authorities, this will become history in a few years to come,” said former DCEA Commissioner for Operations Mihayo Msikela.

In Singida region, authorities had arrested 20 people in an operation targeting drug abusers and dealers. Among those who have been arrested, 13 were found with 7,360 rolls of bhang, 41kg of khat and 220 grames of a substance believed to be heroin.
