Interior CS Fred Matiang'i introduced the new reforms after disbanding the Firearms Licensing Board

Kenyans will now be charged only Sh2,000 for a gun holding license, this is after Interior CS Fred Matiang'i reformed the Firearms Licensing Board.

CS Matiang'i allegedly disbanded the boardafter it was discovered that members were colluding with officers to overcharge citizens for the gun license.

According to the report prepared by ministry officials and National Intelligence Service (NIS) officers, the board charged up to Sh200,000 for the Sh2,000 document.

In addition, the board is reported to have failed to update the civilian firearms registry which led to a resurgence of illegal firearms within the country.

"This is what angered the CS and forced him to disband the board.

"He realised that there were so many gaps in record keeping, yet people still managed to acquire certificates by paying bribes," a source at the CS's office told Daily Nation.

New Board Appointed

Justifying his decision to disband FLB, Matiang'i outlined that consultations with the president's National Security Advisory Board had seen no other way to deal with the improrpiety at the board.

On Thursday, Dr Matiang'i issued a gazette notice with the names of the new board members with Charles Mwongera Mikindia as head.

Other members are David Kahinga, Jackson Kimutai Rotich, Vincent Wahoro, Nancy Kabete, Justin Odhiambo Khaduli and Lazarus Mbondo who will serve for only three years.

According to the CS, their primary mandate is to digitize the library of licensed gun holders in the country.

You really need guns for self defence, GoK has failed to protect mwananchi, in Turkana every family has guns, without guns nor life.

We should have the right to bear arms, as long as the right requirements are met especially how responsible a person is to handle a gun. more guns in the right hands are good for security.

Hahahaha, uliza USA wanavyoangaika na hiyo policy, iwapo sasa hivi bila hiyo policy lakini bado mauaji ndani ya familia za Kenya yanatisha, wanafunzi wanachoma shula kila siku. Subirini muone kitakachowakuta, with high rate of crime without guns, what will happen if guns are easily available?

Kwa mara ya Kwanza nakubaliana na wewe, huyu waziri hajui kwenye anatuingiza

The minister is fighting corruption in the licensing board, the document costs 2000shs but some officials have turned it into a business, poeple just come give cash and are not even vetted to see if they can handle guns.. you cannot be issued with a gun without vetting.
Because of this corruption you see stupid people with guns in clubs blandishing them after minor provocations..

Hapa umenena. Japo huyu waziri anafanya kazi nzuri, hili nimekataa.

Have you read the article bro?

Yeah I did read the article, it's more about fighting corruption, which is a good thing, a document that costs 2,000 was going to as far as 200,000.
However, I never knew official gun license was so cheap, so this has invoked a discussion around the whole spectrum. Of course such licenses won't be dished out to every Thomas, but it shouldn't be so cheap, the legislation needs to be reviewed.

Ordinary Bongolalas can't be given such privileges. Only Civilized countries allow their Citizens to have Guns. Kenya already has a number of it's people who own them, the only problem being tackled is illegal ownership and manufacturing. It is not something new. Infact guns are sold here Legally and also made illegally, which is a problem being tackled even in the US.

Guns are always available in Kenya infact even some of the poor also possess such. But what is being done is to fight the illegal possession of guns through corruption. One must undergo a legal process to attain one.

Yes, i know someone who works there, guns are given to the ones who have cash, no matter your character..very dangerous.

Kwanza Hii nihatari hata kwa Tanzania
Tunasumbuliwa sana na Burundi
leo kenya Iongezeke!!
hali itakuwa mbaya sana
Silaha nyingi zitavuka Tanzania

The problem is corruption, not 2000shs, even if you charge 100shs, corruption will find its way.

One of the biggest reason why Kenya ranked number 17 in the list of failed states is illegal possession of guns, in Turkana na Pokots communities, nearly every family has more than one AK 47, that is very dangerous situation.

So you think money should be the deterrent, and not the vetting. As it is a freedom, accessibility shouldn't be hindered by costs. As long as I am well vetted. Using costs is a dangerous path, that may mean only the rich can have access to many freedoms.. Which is sadly a state that we are in, in many fields.. like housing, health, security... For a CS, his allegiance is first to the people.
Now I also hate guns, like really hate them even the ones issued to the police, but we have a law that allows citizens to own it.. so it is either as a solution we say no guns to any private citizen or keep the law as it is and make it fair to everyone. I think we shouldn't have guns. Just change the law.

Teh teh teh tihiii
ati vichwa vya mathare ndo vipewe guns.
