Interior CS Fred Matiang'i introduced the new reforms after disbanding the Firearms Licensing Board
Kenyans will now be charged only Sh2,000 for a gun holding license, this is after Interior CS Fred Matiang'i reformed the Firearms Licensing Board.
CS Matiang'i allegedly disbanded the boardafter it was discovered that members were colluding with officers to overcharge citizens for the gun license.
According to the report prepared by ministry officials and National Intelligence Service (NIS) officers, the board charged up to Sh200,000 for the Sh2,000 document.
In addition, the board is reported to have failed to update the civilian firearms registry which led to a resurgence of illegal firearms within the country.
"This is what angered the CS and forced him to disband the board.
"He realised that there were so many gaps in record keeping, yet people still managed to acquire certificates by paying bribes," a source at the CS's office told Daily Nation.
New Board Appointed
Justifying his decision to disband FLB, Matiang'i outlined that consultations with the president's National Security Advisory Board had seen no other way to deal with the improrpiety at the board.
On Thursday, Dr Matiang'i issued a gazette notice with the names of the new board members with Charles Mwongera Mikindia as head.
Other members are David Kahinga, Jackson Kimutai Rotich, Vincent Wahoro, Nancy Kabete, Justin Odhiambo Khaduli and Lazarus Mbondo who will serve for only three years.
According to the CS, their primary mandate is to digitize the library of licensed gun holders in the country.
