Solar-powered centre pivot irrigation scheme at Lodwar, Turkana County.

The Ksh 70 million project is the first solar-powered centre pivot irrigation scheme in Kenya to utilize underground water aquifer for irrigation. The 150-acres Napuu pivot irrigation under Kerio Valley Development Authority is for commercial maize and sorghum. Devolution CS Mwangi Kiunjuri said: 'this project provides a great opportunity for the beneficiaries to learn modern farming techniques, improve food security and reduce relief food distribution.'

Water and irrigation CS Eugene Wamalwa promised to expand all irrigation schemes including Napuu and Loyapat projects. Turkana has a total of 47 irrigation projects with Katilu irrigation scheme being the largest with 2,000 acres.
