Nzega MP Hamisi Kigwangalla, who also chairs Parliament's Regional Administration and Local Government Committee, addresses a news conference in Dar es Dar es Salaam yesterday.
Nzega MP Hamisi Kigwangalla declared that he will vie for the country's presidency in the forthcoming General Election.
The politician made his intent known at a news conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday. Flanked by members of his family, Dr Kigwangalla, who also chairs the Parliamentary Regional Administration and Local Government(RALG) Committee, told journalists he would go for the top job on the ruling CCM ticket.
"I'm doing this on my own free will. I have neither been influenced by my family nor my party," said Dr Kigwangalla, who is a medical doctor by profession.
Dr Kigwangalla becomes the second youthful politician to declare interest in the country's senior-most political post. The deputy minister of Communication, Science and Technology January Makamba made the same decleration in July.
The Bumbuli MP said he were 90 per cent certain he would contest the seat come next year, when the current office bearer's term expires.
Other politicians, who have already shown they are eyeing the presidency in the 2015 polls are, Premier Mizengo Pinda, who did so last month and Constituent Assembly chairman Samuel Sitta just a week ago.
In expressing his intent yesterday, Dr Kigwangalla said: "I have reached this decision after a long soul searching. I insist, nobody requested me to run."
The MP maintained that his intent was based on conscience, and asked Tanzanians to take time to weigh his suitability for the job.
"I'm sure to make a very good and competent leader. My record is there and speaks for itself, but I leave it to Tanzanians to size me up ahead of the coming elections," said Dr Kigwangalla.
According to the Nzega MP, he is determined to raise the country's economy to a double digit growth, also vowing to revive the railways transport syetem.
More employment for the youth is among the agendas he would focus on, should he get endorsed to run for big job.
He also added that he was determined to improve the ailing health sector, considering the fact that he is a trained medical doctor.
