CAROLINE ULIWA, 4th April 2009 @ 23:57
President Jakaya Kikwete remains outstanding in leaders' popularity rating in Tanzania by 62 per cent, a professional research agency - Steadman Group - reveals in its quarterly opinion polls. Unveiling the research findings on political, social and economic opinions in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the Country Manager of Steadman Group in Tanzania, Mr Aggrey Oriwo said the poll was designed to address immediate people's major concerns.
He explained that the opinion poll was held from February 13 to 19 in which 2,000 respondents, distributed proportionatelysample across the country, were interviewed. The research findings show that the National Chairman of the Civic United Front (CUF), Prof Ibrahim Lipumba and the National Chairman of Chadema, Mr Freeman Mbowe, are the president's closest contenders, tying at 14 per cent in popularity rating.
"This opinion poll is designed to address the people's main concerns from such issues as transportation to how the people view their current government… we, therefore, aim to keep the public informed of the main concerns of their times," Mr Oriwo explained. The research findings have been categorised in several dimensions, among them being feelers on what Tanzanians would choose as the main issues to be tackled immediately by their government.
In this, albino killings had the highest vote with 39 per cent rating, whereas 18 per cent would like to see their government addressing corruption more seriously. Also, a little less than 20 per cent of the respondents said they would like the escalating costs of living to be looked at constructively. On the government's performance in the last twelve months, 41per cent of the respondents approved the way thingshave been run.
This group expressed its satisfaction with the implementation of the pledges by the government to improve infrastructure and boost both primary and secondary education. On democracy, whether it is effective in the country, 57 per cent of the people expressed their views that democracy had minor problems, whereas 26 per cent said there were major problems. The gender issue was also addressed though to a minor extent via a question on whether gender violence was ever reported to the local police.
An alarming 94 per cent said that they had never done so while 6 per cent had. Of the six per cent, 23 per cent reported that authorities were very helpful, while 24 per cent reported that authorities seemed less concerned. The poll further showed that the Tanzanians are likely to vote for either Maalim Seif Shariff Hamad (23 per cent) or Dr Mohammed Gharib Bilal (21 per cent) respectively as the next Zanzibar president. National soccer team coach Marcio Maximo was also alongside Mr Kikwete as the country's most popular figure, followed by the Prime Minister, Mr Mizengo Pinda. The media in general followed. Steadman is well known for opinion polling, market research and media monitoring in many Sub- Saharan countries.
