Wednesday food for thoughts:

I often wonder why did Tanzania abandon agriculture as a mode of economy to create wealth and build up its income reserves!

If 80% of citizens are in rural areas have been engaging in peasantry and farming, livestock herding even fishing for generations, one would have assumed this is an easy way to build robust economy focusing on farming food and cash crops, livestock and fishing.

It is a mode of economy that already has enough human capital that is skilled and what was needed was simply inject more capital and modern day mechanism to improve farming and quality of food produced.

Agriculture activities in Tanzania is te easiest way to generate wealth to our community.

Not sure why we shifted our priorities into economic activities that we have least know how and labor force is not well skilled.

If only we would have taken Kilimo as way to get ourselves out of poverty, and emphasis and promote diligent kilimo activities including establishment of proper food storage and processing, we would have been touring the world seeking aid!

Everyone needs food, the demand for food never ceases and it is a guaranteed income.

With all arable land and waters, Tanzania is capable to grow enough food to feed at least half a billion mouths!

This is feeding itself, dominate the food market and distribution in neighboring East and Central Africa and even exports to countries as far as Middle East and China!

There shouldn't be a reason for a Tanzanian to be living in abject poverty, struggling to feed family and mostly there wouldn't have been any need to import food at all!

I hope the future leaders of Tanzania will recognize this that we have sufficient and skilled labor to make Tanzania a food distributor to feed at least 10% of world's population!

Now do the maths and see how much of revenues we could generate and move ourselves from least developed country to a developing country!

Yes I am full of optimism and I know if we have right leaders who have right will, in 10 years we will not be borrowing a penny from no one and we could have our average income per person grow to at least close to $10000!

Am may be dreaming and an economist may say that's unachievable...

But I have done a simple math: let's say if Peter the peasant today can be educated to produce 50 bags of beans on his 10 acre plot from the 6 bags he is harvesting today, what would he do with the extra 44 bags? Now ask yourselves of the 20 millions Peters' and their nearly a billion extra bags of beans.....

I am hopeful....

Hili kilimo kiwe na maana Tanzania, ni lazima sekta ya kilimo iwe tegemezi ya sekta zingine za uchumi. Hivyo huwezi kusema kilimo ni uti wa mgongo.
