DAR ES SALAAM, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian authorities said on Thursday they were planning to expand global markets to North America and Asia for processed Nile perch from Lake Victoria.

Isack Kamwelwe, the east African nation's Minister for Works, Transport and Communications, said currently processed Nile perch from Lake Victoria was being sold to European markets in Belgium, Holland, Germany, France and Portugal.

He told a news conference in the capital Dodoma that since Ethiopian Airlines started to ferry processed fish to the European markets on May 20, a total of 147 tonnes of fish have been transported to the markets.

Kamwelwe addressed the news conference at the end of a one-day meeting that brought together ministers for Finance and Planning, Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Livestock and Fisheries, Agriculture and Works, Transport and Communication to see how the markets for processed fish from Lake Victoria could be expanded to North America and Asia.

Kamwelwe said the meeting also agreed to invite other airlines other than Ethiopian Airlines from across the world to ferry fish from Lake Victoria and other commodities, including fruits and fresh vegetables.

The minister added that the meeting also agreed to use refrigerated vehicles for ferrying processed fish from Mwanza region to the Dar es Salaam port and Tanga port on the Indian Ocean coastline for transportation overseas.
