May 10, 1775: Princess Caroline Matilda of Great Britain, Queen of Denmark and Norway, died of scarlet fever while in exile in Celle, Germany, aged only twenty-three years old.
She had been disgraced, sent from court, and divorced due to her extramarital affair with Dr. Johann Friedrich Struensee, who was executed for his part in the affair.
The youngest and posthumous daughter of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, she married her first cousin, King Christian VII of Denmark and Norway, in 1766, but it was clearly a very unhappy marriage.
