Kenya Airways [HASHTAG]#ticker[/HASHTAG]:KQ is staring at a possible loss of its regional market share following the planned revival of national carriers in Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia.

Kenya Airways, popularly known by the code KQ, has been enjoying a big presence in these countries capitalising on lack of national airlines.

Air Tanzania is welcoming a new aircraft- Bombardier Q-400, which is the third since President John Magufuli rose to power, in an effort to revive the ailing airline.

The airline has also lined up three more jet aircraft, including two Bombardier C300s and one Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner to arrive in the country before the end of this year.
Uganda is also in the process of reviving its national airline before the end of the year after the cabinet approved the plan.

This will cut the 15 years dominance that KQ has been enjoying at Entebbe which might result in revenue loss as Uganda seeks to claw back regional routes to kick-start an ambitious global outreach.

Kenya’s Transport Principal Secretary Paul Maringa, however, says the move will not affect KQ’s earnings as part of the efforts to revive the local airline are aimed at making it competitive in the regional market.

“There will be increased competition obviously, but this does not mean it will affect the operations of KQ. We are banking our strength on the services that we offer, which will keep us going even in the presence of stiff competition,” said the PS.

Prof Maringa said there is nothing wrong with competition, adding that what matters is how effective Kenya Airways will be in handling the situation.

“KQ remains dominant in most routes and we have a good partnership in Europe. We are also banking on the direct flights to the US scheduled to start in the next few months to remain the most preferred regional airline,” he said, adding that KQ good brand will give it an edge in the wake of competition.

Ethiopian Airlines, arguably Africa’s most profitable career, is also focusing on reviving some of the stalled airlines in the region. The airline has acquired a 45 per cent stake in Zambia Airways that is set to be re-launched after more than two decades.

Under the pact, the Zambian government will be the majority shareholder with a 55 per cent stake.

KQ has at least four daily flights to Dar es Salaam, five to Entebbe, four to Lusaka Zambia and at least one more other daily flight to Livingstone (Zambia).

Ethiopian Airlines is also seeking to set up hubs in southern Africa, Central Africa and the Horn that connect neighbouring countries.

According to the airline, it is working with Malawi and Zambia as southern Africa hubs. Another hub would be in central Africa, covering the Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo Brazzaville and Chad.

Former KQ chief executive officer Mbuvi Ngunze said in 2016 that their focus was on African routes, which was proving to be profitable.

“We prefer increasing frequencies in the current destination other than growth to others. Our focus is clearly Africa and we can see the strategy in Africa has started paying dividends,” said Mr Ngunze then.

The Kenya Airways’ shareholder value moved into positive territory riding on last year’s balance sheet restructuring that reduced its annual debt payment obligations, leaving room to revamp its operations.

KQ’s equity position stood at Sh417 million in the nine months between April and December 2017 compared to negative Sh45 billion in the year to March 2017, according to a financial report that was released last month.

The change in fortunes follows a complex restructuring of the business that saw Kenya Airways main creditors — 10 commercial banks and the government — convert Sh44.2 billion loans into equity to save it from total collapse.

Dreams and Wishes are only good when asleep.

I think JPM is doing a great Job in reviving Air Transportation in TZ. His strategy is commendable, instead of having ATCL own the new planes, the government owns them and leases to ATCL..This will prevent creditors from selling off the planes incase ATCL has credit problems in its future operations.
He is also Renovating Airports and Expanding JNIA to international standards to avoid playing second fiddle to JKIA. Further more he is installing his own Radar System and this will Make TZ airspace meet FAA standards and allow more international traffic into TZ.
Good Strategy, Good Job, Commendable

Aside international airports in Mwanza, Songwe, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar n Dar there are 11 regional airports under modernization n some newly constructed around the country. And he is looking for funds to start a construction of another international airport in Kilakala Dodoma, the new capital.

Hapa hata mkashikana Rwanda, Tz, Uganda, Sudan, DRC, Zambia, Mozambique na Malawi hamuwezi kuifikia KQ unless you bring Ethiopia on board.😀😀😀

Happy dreaming Tanzanians

I repeat, Uhuru must join Kagame and Museven to associate himself with Magufuli, to make him his close friend in order to salvage Kenya economy.

The problem with you is that you think JPM is Investing in Air Transport infractruture to compete with KQ, That is not his goal, Air transport will Grow Tz's Tourism and horticulture business. If KQ continues to sleep as they have always done, ATCL will catchup and overtake them, but this is an afterthought not the main agenda of JPM

Sumbawanga Airport to Receive 56bn/ - Facelift

By Peti Siyame
Sumbawanga — THE Sumbawanga Airport is set to receive a 55.9bn/- major facelift and become an international facility. The airport, once completed, sets to stimulate economic growth in the region while at the same time attract business opportunities in the neighbouring countries--Zambia and DRC.

Not only that but also, the airport will become a gateway to tourism attractions such as Kalambo Falls in Kalambo District. The Deputy Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Engineer Atashasta Niditiye, yesterday visited and inspected the airport during his two day working tour in Rukwa region.

The engineer affirmed that the government through Tanzania Aviation Authority (TAA) has secured over 55.9bn/ being a soft loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) for the major rehabilitation and expansion of the Airport .

To pave way for the construction, the deputy minister, said the government has set aside some 3.3bn/- to compensate about 97 residents. The residents are from two wards of Old Sumbawanga about 27 people and Izia 70 whose areas will be taken for the project.

He said that the compensation money has been verified by experts from the Ministry of Finance and Planning and all registered residents from the two wards will be compensated very soon in quest to start the project. Eng Niditiye was shocked to witnesse a crowd of people, auto - rickshaws, and motorbikes crisscrossing over the facility while kids were busy playing football.

He immediately directed TAA to ensure the airport boundaries are identified, demarcated and fenced as soon as possible . While the Acting Rukwa Regional Commissioner (RC), Dr Halfany Haule who is also the Sumbawanga District Commissioner (DC) said the airport will provide the area with an ample transportation facility that will open up the region's sky to international market.

A cross-section of Rukwa residents told the 'Daily News' in separate interviews that they welcome the expansion since it will increase opportunity for the economic growth at individual and regional level as well. Historically, the airport was built 1945 shortly after the World War II meant to serve small airplane for spraying farms with insecticide.

In 1985 it was rehabilitated and was officially opened by the former President Ally Hassan Mwinyi for domestic flights.

Finally, Four Air Tanzania Company Planes Arrive in July

By Sylivester Domasa

Dodoma — FOUR newly procured planes for Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) are expected in the country next July, the government announced here yesterday.

The Director of Information Services, Dr Hassan Abbas said the new planes from the Canadian Bombardier Manufacturer will arrive in the next four months. The government statement ends months of speculations on the fleet plight.

The government signed a firm purchase agreement with Bombardier Commercial Aircraft for the two Q400 turboprop airliners in July 2016. The 76-seater aircraft chiefly for commercial airline operations were pegged at 62 million US dollars (over 140bn/-).The state further signed another 224.6 million US dollar (over 500bn/-) deal for one Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner and jetliners CS300 to add up to the already delivered two Q400 planes.

"I understand there have been lots of rumours going on out there, but I'm here to assure you that our new planes, including the Boeing 787-8 will arrive this July," he said. Dr Abbas decried the efforts doomsters were investing to frustrate the national flag carrier revival initiatives, saying, "They will all fail because the government is determined to revive the airline company.

" It was earlier reported that the Tanzanian aircraft, Bombardier Q400, which was previously scheduled to arrive in the country last July, was seized in Canada due to the government failure to pay 38 million US dollars it owed the UK's Stirling Civil Engineering Limited.

Stirling Civil Engineering Limited, which was contracted to construct the Wazo Hill- Bagamoyo road, accuses the government of illegitimately terminating its contract without compensation.

The firm, successfully sued Tanzania at the International Court of Arbitration in Montreal Canada, leading to the seizure of the aircraft. Dr Abbas said there are more challenges that the government was handling, insisting that all was going well at the ATCL. He said the government had commissioned rehabilitation of 10 airports including Mwanza, Geita and Tabora to accommodate the new aircrafts.

Without giving more details, Dr Abbas said the government had already started constructing the new Dodoma International Airport at Msalato. The chief spokesperson said expansion works on Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam were also going on well.

The Dreamliner, observers say, will be the top plane of Air Tanzania. It is not clear which route it will launch its first journey, but industry sources hint that it will operate on the longhaul international routes, linking Dar es Salaam with other leading destinations in Africa, Europe, Asia and America.
