You can say it like;
The King is here, with his wives. Only when the King is the main subject. But if the King and his wives were expected to arrive at the same time you will say; The King and his wives are here.
 
Is the confusion of Are and His because of the "King"?
Try to Replace "King " with anything else like
Juma and his wives.....here (are/is)
The Farmer and his wives....here (are/is)

In my opinion the "AND" between King AND his wives gives us two subjects .Hence it's appropriate to use ARE that IS

So sentensi inamuhusu king, mkewe ni kiambata tu

Hapo jibu ni Is,kwa sababu inamrudia king,ambaye ndio subject.
