Despite the fact that statistics shows the rate of youth unemployment in Tanzania has declined during the past five years, the numbers of youth who are unemployed in streets are continuing to soar. Every year significant number of graduates ready to enter the workforce are poured in the streets from colleges and universities without having nowhere to go afterwards. It is quite evident that they are equipped with necessary technical know how to perform their career duties but it is evident as well that they lack crucial and equally important skills to help them navigate stormy water of being unemployed. Here are six recommendation which might help these graduates succeed in life after graduating.

Being unemployed for many means having a lot of free time. This time can be very boring and stressful or exciting depending on how someone spends his time. To make this free time work on one’s advantage he must consider doing things which fall under two groups of activities. First group entails all activities which shall help in boosting one’s chances of being noticed and the later fall under those activities which shall offer him alternative earning opportunities. Since these activities can overlap at any given moment it is vital that he get involved in both set of activities simultaneously.

Getting involved with social groups
There are no better place to get connections than in social groups. Isn’t connection a leading requirement to land a job nowadays? Since most graduates lack those connections themselves, isn’t it a must then to forge theirs by themselves? A social group can be be a religious group, an NGO, a political party or any group of such characteristics which enable meeting new people who aims to work towards the same goal. Its a better place to sharpen one’s abilities and adding to the number of peoples who have a potential of offering or recommending a job.

Volunteering programs
Several institutions offer volunteering opportunity by offering internship programs that help fresh graduates gain working experience necessary to thrive in the job. Institute like Uongozi Institute,CRDB andUnilever are among of those institutions offering these opportunities. To boost chances of getting noticed in the labor market it is not a bad idea to participate in such programs for a specific period of time.

Attending Seminars and professional workshops
Some professions keep changing with time and require constant updating on one’s skills to remain relevant. Rapid technological changes and changes in legislation forces professionals to adapt. Universities and Professionals boards regularly prepares seminars and workshops to fill this gap in profession. Graduates need to use this opportunities to became relevant otherwise they wont fit.

Learning new technical skills
In Tanzania, each year in almost every profession there is huge number of students graduating. With the current rate of economic growth and job creation It’s no secret that it is mathematically impossible to hire all of them in formal sector. They need to look for alternative and legal way of making a living just in case the original plan of being employed in formal sector doesn’t work out. There are many things that in the long run might be useful .Things like Mobile Phones repairs , research patners, even things like learning how to play musical instruments can be helpful. Many graduates make a living this way and are comfortable with their lives.

Go for post graduate programs or get professional certification
If one have resources and time why not go for post graduate studies? This might be a good way of spending your free time although this decision must be done wisely because in some cases this alone can be a hindrance. Better yet one can sit for professional boards exams like CPA,CPSP,CPB and such. For some professions this shall add significant value and worth to ones ability. So Go get certified what a better way of feeling competent.

Sending as many applications as possible
Sometimes people gets weary of applying for the job that they never seem to land. Yes it ‘s frustrating to apply and never even make to the interview room but it’s the only way that most people use to get a job. That is the most common way that potential employers will notice potential employees.
So keep updating your resume, tailor it to fit the job you are applying for and apply as many times as possible. The good thing nowadays is that sending a job application can be done at the luxury of one’s bed.

What roles different authorities of the society should play in addressing this issue?
Well that was some pointers regarding what graduates should do however different authorities within societies have a huge part to play in making sure our youth during this period remain sane and focused. Family members has a big role of encouraging these young people and supporting them with means necessary that will allow them to engage in either some or all activities mentioned earlier in this article . Religious institutions should recognize moral power they hold over the society and try to capitalize on that to reach onto these young graduates to help them not to get involved with bad groups and probably criminal activities.
The government must support growth of private sector so as to create more jobs and putting foward policies which encourages individual startups. What is worrying in Tanzania lately is that the more one studies, the lesser the chance of getting employed. One has a greater chances of getting employed as a bachelor degree graduate than a holder of masters degree. This discourages graduates from taking more studies during the time they have nothing to do. Here the government should look at the issue to find a better solution.

The bitter truth
In our society the biggest challenge is not finding a job but rather a mentality. Our young people believe that they go to university to get a degree so that they might have a chance in the labor market. Yes that can be a reason but the most important truth must be put foward and maybe shall help our brothers and sisters to think more. People needs to understand education is given to the society so as to help them understand problems they are facing, finding a way to solve them and while doing it earn something to support one's life expenses.
Instead of waiting for an opportunity that probably won't arrive ,young graduates should start and try to examine their societies, looking for a something to offer which can either be a service or a product, apply the knowledge acquired during their studies, invest necessary time and effort and hopefully the business will take off.Through this they shall shift from waiting to be employed and be employers.
