Liverpool’s hellish season hit a fresh low on Wednesday morning, with the Reds handed arguably their worst-ever Champions League defeat in a horrific collapse.
In a rematch of last year’s decider, Liverpool faced Spanish giants Real Madrid - and once again came up painfully short.
Liverpool led by two early goals - a sublime piece of skill from Darwin Nunez opened the scoring, before a terrible error from Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois gifted Mohamed Salah the second.
But it was all downhill from there, with Madrid scoring five unanswered goals to win the first leg of their last-16 tie 5-2, and virtually end Liverpool’s Champions League campaign ahead of the second leg.
Barring a stunning turnaround in the second leg in Madrid, the Spaniards will have eliminated Liverpool from the European competition four times in six seasons, including two finals.
Brazilian youngster Vinicius Junior scored the first two of Madrid’s goals - and like Liverpool’s second to Salah, his second strike was also the result of a calamitous goalkeeping error. Eder Militao made it three when some woeful Liverpool defending left him unmarked and able to easily head the ball and score shortly after half-time.
French superstar Karim Benzema added the final pair of goals.
Liverpool had never conceded four goals at home in European competition. That record was demolished in a humiliating night at Anfield as Liverpool crashed back to earth after a pair of league wins appeared to turn the Reds’ dismal season around.
