Row over Kenyatta gift to squatters

By Renson Mnyamwezi

COAST; KENYA: Distribution of the 4,000 acres of land donated by the Kenyatta family to squatters in Taita Taveta County has stalled, a former MP has said.

Former Taveta MP Naomi Shaban that the process had stalled because the number of alleged squatters demanding a share had risen "beyond control".

At the same time, Shaban accused Public Health minister Beth Mugo of sparking needless debate with her recent statement that the land was being subdivided.

"My counterpart does not understand the land issue in the area and she should not have commented on it," said Shaaban in an interview with The Standard yesterday.

Leaders in Taveta District are sharply divided over whether the Kenyatta family has donated 4,000 acres of land to settle squatters in Taita-Taveta County as claimed.

Settlement scheme

"We want the Kenyatta family to show us the land it claims to have donated to settle hundreds of residents who have been living as squatters on the farm for years," demanded Stephen Odiaga, a candidate for Taveta parliamentary seat.

The Mombasa-based lawyer said the land in question is under lease-hold title and it will be difficult for the family to donate it without following the laid down government procedures.

According to the law, the land has to revert back to the Government which will then either establish a settlement scheme or declare it an adjudication area to settle the landless. "When did the family donate land in the area? The family needs to give residents facts on this thorny issue," said Odiaga.

The hundreds of squatters in Sir Ramson, Irrigation area, Kidong and Njukinyi who have lived in the area for years have to be told the truth as tension continues to rise," added the Ford-Kenya parliamentary candidate.

The lawyer said the land in question is under lease hold title and it will be difficult for the family to donate it without following the laid down procedures.

Its obnoxious that a man sitting on more than 100,000 acres of land his father stole from these people is
offering a mere 4,000 acres as a campaign bribe for the gullible Kenyan voter. Word is that the residents
demanded more acreage but the Kenyatta family were unmasked when they refused to budge and consequently
the locals refused the gesture.

Meanwhile Basil Criticos is also sitting on a huge chunk of land in this area which needs to be addressed!

This land issue is stuck in the campaign rhetoric of 2013 and just like a bush fire it continues to feed itself.
No wonder Uhuru Kenyatta chickened out of the 2nd Presidential debate.

Residents now claim Kenyatta family illegally acquired land in Taita-Taveta

By PATRICK BEJA and RENSON MWANYAMWEZI

Taita Taveta; Kenya: The admission by Jubilee presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta that his family owns about 30,000 acres of land in Taita Taveta County has elicited angry reactions from residents.

The residents and leaders claimed that the land was irregularly acquired and should be returned to the community.

They dismissed claims by Uhuru during the second presidential debate in Nairobi on Monday night that the land was acquired through a "willing buyer willing seller" deal.

The residents accused the Deputy Prime Minister of being insincere on the controversial land question and said 80 per cent of the population in Challa Division where the Kenyatta land is located were squatters.

Two Taveta parliamentary aspirants Ruth Lelewu (ODM) and Stephen Odiaga (Ford-Kenya) claimed that the Kenyatta family irregularly acquired the most productive land in the area.

"It is not willing buyer and willing seller as claimed by Uhuru Kenyatta during the presidential debate. The fact remains that the local community was not consulted when the land was acquired by the Kenyatta family and they want it back," claimed Lelewu.

Odiaga, a Mombasa lawyer, said the land belongs to the local community and should be returned.
Speaking to The Standard from Taveta yesterday, Odiaga accused the Kenyatta family of using the entire Tsavo River water source at the expense of the locals.

"The family is the only one benefiting from the Tsavo River water and farmers in Jipe Settlement Scheme, Kidong and Sir Ramson. The community should be allowed to use the water for irrigation to improve food security," he added.

During the presidential debate Uhuru said: "My family owns 30,000 acres in Taveta. Most of the land there is government land. My family donated part of the land to settle squatters."

Uhuru maintained that they acquired the land legally and have not been investigated for any wrong doing.

And Coast residents want the National Land Commission to implement the Njonjo and Ndung'u landreports and ensure squatters are settled.

Chairman of the Coast Landless Social Forum and an official of the Ujamaa Centre Mr Mrima Wanyepe welcomed Safina presidential candidate's remarks that historical land injustices were committed from Lamu to Vanga at the Coast.

In Lamu County, residents welcomed remarks by Amani presidential candidate Musalia Mudavadi that some land speculators have already acquired plots in Manda Bay to sell at a higher price when the Lamu port project kicks off. However, they blamed the Government for issuing title deeds to the land speculators.

A civil society activist from Taita Taveta County Mr Mwakio Ndau demanded that the Kenyatta family returns the land to locals without seeking compensation as there was no evidence of the community selling its land.

"At independence, Government was supposed to acquire tracts of land under sisal in Taita Taveta County belonging to white settlers and redistribute it to the local people but instead influential individuals allocated it to themselves and friends," Ndau argued.

Lelewu denied claims by Uhuru and Cabinet Minister Beth Mugo that the Kenyatta family had donated land to resettle squatters in Taita. "The family has not donated 4,000 acres of land as claimed by family members. This is political gimmick to hoodwink locals to support Uhuru," he claimed.

But Gender and Social Services Development Minister Naomi Shaban and Taveta DC Heribae Nkaduda confirmed the Kenyatta family donated 4,000 acres of land to be distributed to squatters in the region.

Dr Shaban, however, said the settlement programme had stalled following a controversy on the list of beneficiaries. "The land in question is still available to settle the landless. The settlement process was stopped after the squatter list kept on changing," she said.

I am waiting to see if he wins the election, then I can tell what kind of people African voters are.

This is an interesting read that throws caution to the wind..

The Backlash Against Uhuru’s Remarks Rages Deep Into The Villages

Uhuru-Kenyatta-007.jpg

The impact of the presidential debate continues to reverberate far and wide with the prep teams feeling the heat. Of interest is Uhuru Kenyatta’s now infamous politically suicidal remarks “willing seller, willing buyer”, which has now been remixed to “wailing seller, willing buyer

Intelligence reports indicate that the Jubilee coalition is a house in turmoil as a result of the backlash caused by Uhuru’s utterances during the second and last presidential debate. Uhuru’s lead strategist who guided his debate prep team has been reprimanded, and accusations and counter accusations have since been flying left, right and centre!

Indeed, Uhuru was eloquent and many agreed that his performance was good. However, that one killer remark changed fortunes in key battle ground areas of Rift Valley and Coast province.

It is said that a day after the debate, the National Intelligence Service, observed a seismic movement in the voter landscape, with disgruntled Kalenjin voters openly expressing their disgust at the remarks that implied that their huge tracts of ancestral land currently held by the Kikuyu diaspora, changed hands on “a willing buyer, willing seller basis”.

It is no longer business as usual and CORD’s Raila Odinga is reaping big.

Reports indicate that Uhuru’s unguarded remark is actually one of the reasons that led to Radio personality and local celebrity Joshua arap Sang’s decision to break his silence and throw his weight behind Raila Odinga. The remark smacks of insincerity and contempt for those with land grievances dating to the colonial times.

A worried senior Intelligence officer close to Uhuru is said to have called Uhuru a day after the debate, wondering aloud who advises the son of Ngina. “How could you throw the election away just like that? In that unguarded moment, you gave away the presidency to Tinga’’, the senior intelligence officer mourned.

The intelligence officer is said to have also called to deliver the grim news to Ruto but instead was optimistic and dismissed the intelligence reports as “cooked stuff” saying Rift Valley electorate were solidly behind Uhuru and Jubilee to the last man.

“My friend, mambo ya debate hiyo ni ya watu wa Nairobi, the Kalenjin nation is steadfast in Jubilee, mambo ya mashamba tuliongea Nakuru tukamaliza. I think you need to do another survey. Hii ni porojo, unless there is something else you want us to believe. Kama iko mambo ingine you better say it openly”, a furious Ruto retorted.

Uhuru is blaming URP strategists for convincing him to attend the debate for which he had expressed reservations to attend.
“Uhuru had sound advice from his TNA team particularly that of Jasper Mbiuki, his Director of legal affairs and Public relations Ed Staite to skip the debate but Ruto, Murkomen and other URP stalwarts in the coalition insisted that he attends”. A source close to Uhuru who sought anonymity said.

The source indicated that the TNA wing is blaming the URP team for the debate fiasco, as they are the ones who introduced a land policy expert who played a big role in Uhuru debate preparations.

It is said that on Wednesday, both Uhuru and Ruto were together briefed again on the new developments on the ground that CORD was regaining support among the Kalenjins, and was already past the 50% mark. It was agreed that leading URP luminaries be massively facilitated to counter the worrying situation.

The impact of Joshua Sang’s defection to CORD also featured in the intelligence reports. It was agreed that URP commission radio shows and other equally fast channels to discredit Arap Sang and depict him as a sell out among the locals.

TNA strategists also
requested Ruto, for avoidance of any doubt, to assemble a group of Kalenjin elders to issue a press statement distancing themselves from those who condemned Kenyatta’s willing buyer, willing seller remarks.

The URP team is reported to be putting their best foot forward to ensure the much-anticipated Jubilee rally at the historic Kapkatet stadium rests all unsettled and emerging issues. The elders will be assembled to reconfirm their stand and urge the Kalenjin community to remain steadfast in Jubilee.

However, Ground sources maintain that the Kalenjin community is steadily leaning towards CORD, a situation that may lead to the widening gap between CORD and Jubilee. The remark by Kenyatta seems to have spread wide and deep into the villages like bush fire on a dry savannah grassland.

Land is a key economic resource that allows even the simplest peasant to feed themselves, live in dignity raising their family and importantly, have a place for eternal rest after their time on earth is up, an important cultural aspect in our Kenyan society. Without land, the Kenyan people are left bereft of national pride and purpose.

A Raila Odinga Presidency offers the solution. The solution lies in Constitutional Implementation. The Ndung'u Land Commission was tasked with the responsibility of resolving historical land injustices and they performed this noble duty admirably coming up with a report that, unfortunately, to date lies neglected. This report outlines irregularly allocated land all the way to independence and proposes a roadmap for the restoration of the same. All we need now is an Implementor.

Kenyans must then ask themselves at the ballot box in next week's election, can the main beneficiaries of irregular land allocation now oversee land reform?

Hey Now your eyes are opening? After the ndungu commission on land completed its findings, the coaliton cord included, did not offer leadership for the same and let the issue unattended. you are guilty as cord for negligence! Now you are using the ndungu land report for your publicity and to gain political mileage. Cord has been in government, does not have a proven implementation record, development record, development initiatives..etc...etc

Given the sensitivity of Land issue in Kenyan politics, i dont see Uhuru wining the presidential race. Raila won the election in 2007 and was denied access to the highest office of the land. He didn't lose any of his supporters in the last 5 years of power as a PM of Kenya. In fact, he has garnered more supporters along the way. Why would he miss the votes this time?
