Two people were shot dead during anti-election protests in Mavoko, Machakos county on Thursday.

A 13-year-old was shot on his way to a kiosk in Sofia Slum, while a man was shot in Makadara Shopping centre. Several other people were injured in the violent confrontation between anti-riot police and protesters.

"The violence erupted at Athi River's Bunge La Mwanachi when a contigent of anti-riot police officers arrived in two trucks to clear tyres that were lying [on the road]," a resident said.

Police said more than 100 youths armed with stones and sling shots attempted to storm Mavoko Social Hall, Imani ECD centre and Athi River Primary School Primary polling stations.

IEBC suspended the elections for two hours between 12.15 and 2.17pm.

The bodies were reportedly moved to Athi River Medical Centre Hospital by Kenya Red Cross.

Officials of the facility refused to talk to the press. “I cannot answer those questions please, look for the doctor in charge but he is busy attending to patients,” said an official at the hospital.
