Is laptop radiation dangerous?

With the world becoming more and more electronic, some may wonder if any of these new technologies pose any dangers, especially radiation from something we use every day, such as a laptop. Although laptops do emit radiation, the chances of becoming ill from laptop radiation emissions remain small. However, there are some concerns with the heat generated from laptops.



  • Significance
    • The New York Times reports that 54 percent of Americans aged 18 to 30 own at least one laptop. However, few studies have been done on the effects of laptop radiation. This causes concern amongst many laptop users because we often spend hours with our laptops in physical contact with our body. Even if you do not have a laptop, wireless Internet, also known as "Wi-Fi," can still emit radiation into the air, according to a BBC report.

    Considerations

    • It is important to note that although the effects of laptop radiation have no definitive scientific consensus, the type of radiation emitted from radio waves, televisions and laptop screens is considered low energy, non-ionizing radiation. Non-ionizing radiation generally does not have the energy to break chemical bonds and cause health problems associated with ionizing radiation from nuclear sources, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

    Misconceptions

    • Laptop screens do not pose any danger to the eyes, claims the Health Physics Society. The common issue of "eye fatigue" usually comes from the set-up from your computer. A brightness setting too high, sitting too close to the monitor and monitor height are common sources of eye fatigue. In addition, the Food and Drug Administration regulates radiation emission standards from laptops.

    Warning

    • The only possible danger from the effects of laptop radiation is "thermal radiation," also known as heat. Anything that has warmth, such as the human body, will emit thermal radiation, according to the University of New Mexico. Thermal radiation is not like the type of dangerous radiation associated with nuclear material. When placed on the genitals, however, heat from laptops may cause infertility in men and women, but sperm are more prone to heat damage than ovaries, according to BabyCenter.

    Prevention/Solution

    • The easiest way to prevent possible reproductive damage from laptop thermal radiation is to simply put your laptop on your thighs, or use it at a desk. If you are pregnant, place the laptop anywhere except your abdomen, according to the Health Physics Society. When buying a laptop, make sure to look for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services label confirming that it has been tested for safe levels of radiation.

How to Stop Your Laptop Overheating

Introduction: Computer (Laptop) Cooling Basics

The cooling of the CPU (Central Processing Unit), otherwise referred to as "The Chip" or to laymen"The Brain" of the laptop is a dilemma that most manufacturers have to face when designing a laptop enclosure (casing) and choosing the correct CPU for it. The cooling is

normally performed by a fan and some kind of metal conductor like copper or aluminum called a heat sink. The CPU, and lately theGPU (Graphics Processing Unit), are "connected" to the metal heat sink via a thermal grease or compound. This grease conducts heat but

not electricity. The "trick" for manufacturers is to get rid of as much heat as possible using as small a fan and heat sink as the CPU will allow. Vents are also cut into the casing allowing the fan to suck cool air from the bottom, force it over the heat sink and blow it out the

side or rear thus cooling the CPU and GPU. In more modern times copper is being used as the conducting metal, liquid is "pumped" through the system and radiators and exhaust ports are used just like in motor vehicles. All this to get rid of the heat and make the system run faster.


The Problem

The problem is that over time dust and other particles clog the vents, fan and exhaust port or radiator of the system thus restricting air flow and cooling. This is fixed relatively easily by blowing out the vents and fan with air or using a brush or earbud (Q-tip) to clean away

the dust. Remember: In the computer world - DUST DESTROYS! There is however another hidden problem that occurs when computers (laptops) heat up or overheat. They tend to dry out the thermal compound that conducts the heat thus causing the system to

overheat more quickly. Luckily most CPUs, GPUs and chip manufacturers have built in protection for this. They step down the operating speed bit by bit until they eventually switch off the CPU and thus the system shuts down. So if you have a computer system that starts working slower and slower and then switches off for no apparent reason, overheating could be your problem.


The Solution

To solve the overheating problem, especially in laptops, I am going to show you how to get to the cooling unit, dust it out, replace the thermal grease and put everything together again. In order to demonstrate this I will be using a friend's LG F1 Pro Express Dual laptop

that started exhibiting just such symptoms. It would become sluggish and then suddenly switch off for no reason. This caused him a lot of lost work and a corrupted Outlook PST email file. Here I will show you step by step the solution to this nasty problem.

that hard to get pregnant. We both went back to have a chat and the doctor put Scott forward for a fertility test,’ she said. The couple were then referred to a hospital for tests, which revealed Scott was producing a healthy amount of sperm but they had suffered heat

damage.The heat had actually caused the tail of the sperm to coil around the head, meaning it couldn’t fast enough affecting its motility. Biomedical andrologist Sue Kenworthy, from Queen Alexandra Hospital, confirmed the heat of the laptop can have an effect on

sperm.‘Scott had been producing a healthy amount of sperm but looking under a microscope I saw that there was heat damage,’ she said. ‘Scott was using his laptop every day and for a few hours. It would get really hot, which would have an effect on his sperm,’‘This

showed up under the microscope. The tail of the sperm had coiled around the head. ‘This means it can’t swim quickly and get to the egg. I would say men should place the laptop on a table, rather than on their lap, as this can make a difference,’ Kenworthy said.‘We

carried on trying and we weren’t having any luck. We thought it wasn’t going to happen so we started planning a trip to travel around Thailand. MziziMkavu am 51yrs young....tatizo ni kuwa siyo umri ila kazi a kuzaa nilikwishaimaliza siku nyingi sana..............kwahiyo fertility rates are no longer a savoury thing in my life............
