Dar es Salaam. Tanzania lags behind other East African countries in collecting revenue from mobile phone companies despite its huge number of subscribers.
While a small country like Rwanda, with 11.6 million people, collects $14 million, Tanzania - whose population is almost four times at 44.9 million people - collects only $1.7 million.
According to him, Kenya leads in the region by collecting $79 million revenue from mobile phone companies, followed by Uganda which collects $36 million.
Up to December, 2012, Tanzania had the second highest number of mobile phone subscribers in the region (25.9 million), behind Kenya (39.4 million), Rwanda (six million) and Uganda (17 million)
For the last five years mobile phone companies have paid a total of Sh64 billion as corporate tax and their total investment in 2010 was Sh2.6 trillion, equivalent to a 46 per cent annual increase.
