Hahah Wazungu bhana!

Bomb threat made against FIFA congress in Zurich

An anonymous bomb threat was made against the FIFA congress in Zurich hours before soccer's governing body was due to host its presidential election on Friday.

Police officers searched the arena during the lunch break following the first stage of FIFA's annual meeting before giving the all clear for proceedings to resume after a short delay.

"I can confirm there has been a bomb threat against the FIFA congress," a Zurich police spokesperson said. "Officers have been dispatched."

Upon resumption of the meeting, FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke confirmed that an inspection of the venue had taken place as a precaution but had found no cause for concern.

in FIFA presidential election.

Current president Sepp Blatter was set to seek a fifth term in office, with only one challenger, Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan, running against him.

Earlier, the meeting was briefly halted when two pro-Palestinian protesters interrupted Blatter's opening speech and waved red cards at the president. Palestine opposes Israel's membership of FIFA as part of the ongoing dispute in the region.

Zurich police said the anonymous bomb threat was made by telephone to a Zurich-based newsroom, and that the congress room was searched.

Police spokeswoman Brigitte Vogt earlier confirmed to AFP that a bomb alert had been received at the venue, and that officers were at the scene.

No one was evacuated, but congress participants were initially denied re-entry into the auditorium while authorities conducted a search, a witness told Reuters.

"A search was carried out. The premises have been cleared by the authorities," FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke told the congress after it resumed. Journalists were also allowed back in the building.

Authorities were alerted around 11 a.m. local time, police spokesman Marco Cortesi confirmed. FIFA also acknowledged receipt of the threat to news website handelszeitung.ch.

Local journalists reported that they were forced to leave their places at the venue.

FIFA’s corruption scandal: Behind the scenes

The FIFA presidential election is set to take place on Friday, with many calling for current president Sepp Blatter to step down following the corruption investigation into several of the organization's officials. However, Blatter is expected to be re-elected for a fifth five-year term.

Protests have been taking place outside the meeting venue on Friday, with pro-Palestinian demonstrators calling for Israel's suspension from FIFA.

The vote on Israel's status was set to be held on Friday at the request of Palestinians, who complain about restrictions on training and competition.

Newly elected president Sepp Blatter speaks after Prince Ali withdraws from the second ballot.
Sepp Blatter won FIFA presidential re-election for an unprecedented fifth term as challenger Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan conceded after failing to win by a two-thirds majority in the first round of voting on Friday.
At FIFA's 65th congress in Zurich, the 209 member nations cast their votes and the 79-year-old Blatter garnered 133 votes to Prince Ali's 73 of the 206 valid votes cast, but failed to win the two-third majority on the initial vote (more than 139 out of 209). At that point, Prince Ali addressed the voting members and conceded.
"It has been a wonderful journey in terms of knowing you and working with you, seeing the challenges you have, and I want to thank in particular those of you who were brave enough to support me," Ali said in conceding the election. "But having said that I will be withdrawing from the race. Thank you all very much and I wish you all the best of luck for the future."
Voting was done over secret paper ballots in alphabetical order at two special booths set up at each end of the venue.
"I am now the president of everybody. I am president of FIFA. I thank you, I thank that you have accepted me," said Blatter in a rambling acceptance speech. "We will bring this boat back; we will bring it back to shore.
"We have some organisational problems. We need women in this committee, we have to do more. I will not touch the World Cup, it is too important," said Blatter. "I take responsibility to bring back FIFA; with you we will do it, I am convinced.
"I am a faithful man, now God, Allah or whoever we believe in, they will help us to bring back FIFA. I promise you at the end of my term I will give FIFA to my successor in a very strong position."

The vote came amid turmoil in the organisation. On Wednesday, U.S. authorities indicted 14 people on bribery, racketeering, fraud and money-laundering charges going back to the 1990s and arrested seven officials -- including two serving FIFA vice presidents.
The criminal investigations cast a shadow on Blatter's 17-year reign as president of FIFA, but it was not enough to stop him being elected for another four-year term.
"We don't need revolutions, but we always need evolution," Blatter said during his pre-election speech.
"Yesterday, the day before and today, I am being held accountable for the current storm. OK, so be it. I will shoulder that responsibility. Just as I said, I will take it upon myself. I will accept it and I want to fix FIFA together with you.
"I want to hand over a FIFA that will have emerged from the storm. A FIFA that will have enough safeguards which will not need the political interventions. I promise you this," Blatter said.
In 2011, when Blatter was the only candidate, he got 186 of the 203 valid votes cast.
Leading up to the election, Blatter refused calls to resign after FIFA was targeted by U.S. and Swiss authorities in separate corruption investigations.
Earlier on Friday, Blatter spoke at the FIFA Congress and said the crisis stemmed from the decision to award Russia and Qatar the next two World Cup tournaments. In 2010, Russia was chosen to host the 2018 World Cup and Qatar was awarded the 2022 tournament amid widespread allegations of wrongdoing.
"If two other countries had emerged from the envelope, I think we would not have these problems today," Blatter said. "But we can't go back in time. We are not prophets. We can't say what would have happened."
The United States was one of the losing bidders for the 2022 World Cup.
"I am not going to use the word coincidence but I do have a small question mark," Blatter said about the timing of Wednesday's raid.
Amid the dramatic build-up to the election, UEFA president Michel Platini appealed to Blatter on Thursday to immediately step down -- calls the president rejected.
"I am willing to accept the president of FIFA is responsible for everything but I would at least like to share that responsibility with everyone," Blatter said in a presidential address on Friday morning. "We cannot constantly supervise everyone in football ... you cannot ask everyone to behave ethically."
Blatter also cautioned that "it will take some time" to rebuild FIFA's reputation.
"The events of Wednesday have unleashed a storm and [it] was even questioned whether this congress would be organised or change the agenda," Blatter said. "Today I am appealing to unity and team spirit so we can move forward together. That may not always be easy but it is for this reason that we are here together today."
