exploring Africa together!!

MARANGU ROUTE - ON THE ROOF OF AFRICA:

MARANGU (Coca Cola route); this is the traditional and most straightforward route on the mountain. It is also the busiest and best equipped. If you accept that there will be others around, there are the advantages of good huts, good views of Mawenzi and, of course, others to walk with. If you are travelling by yourself, this is the only route on which you can easily join a group from other operators and walk together.

Day 00: Arrival Moshi.
Arrive Moshi town. Met, and taken to base hotel in Moshi town for an introductory Kili climb briefing upon our arrival. Overnight stay at Hotel bed and breakfast.

Day 01: Moshi to Marangu, onto Mandara Hut.
Drive to Marangu gate at 09.30am. From the gate you walk 3-4 hours through the fascinating rainforest to Mandara Hut at 9,000ft, close to the Maundi Crater for overnight at Mandara Hut, lunch and dinner.

Day 02: Mandara to Horombo Hut.
The climb to Horombo hut starts off as a steep walk through the last of the rain forest and out into tussock grasslands. The walk to Horombo Hut 3,720m (12,200ft) is about 14 km with attitude gain of about 1,000m and will take anything between 5-7 hours. Overnight Horombo Hut, bed, breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 03: Horombo to Kibo Hut.
From Horombo Hut you will climb to Kibo Hut 4,703m (15,430ft), which are 13 km and take about 6-7 hours up the valley behind the huts, last water point and onto the Saddle. Overnight Kibo Hut, bed, breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 04: Kibo to Uhuru, descend to Horombo Hut.
The attempt to reach the summit begins shortly after midnight. For some 5 hours one climbs the steepest and most demanding part of the route to Gilman?s point at 18,640ft on the Crater rim. The remaining 45 minutes to the highest point ? UHURU PEAK is easier. The descent is far less tiring and the night is spent at Horombo Hut, bed, breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 05: Horombo to Marangu gate, and back to Moshi.
The decent continue past Mandara Hut to the Park Headquarters where successful climbers may now collect certificates of achievement. Thereafter transfer back to Moshi for overnight at base hotel for overnight stay, bed and breakfast

Day 06: After breakfast, departure back home or next destination.
