IEBC to use printed voter list after electronic register fails

By Standard Digital Reporter | March 04, 2013

NAIROBI, KENYA: The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission ( IEBC) has directed presiding officers to use manual registers after the electronic voter lists failed in numerous centers countrywide.

Speaking to The Standard IEBC Vice Chair Lillian Mahiri-Zaja assured voters that the exercise will continue usuing the printed voter lists.

"It appears that the poll book is experiencing problems and we have asked our officers to use the printed register," said Mahiri-Zaja

The poll body had earlier said that they will use the electronic kits to verify voters in the exercise.

A voter, Benard Ohawa at Uradi polling station in Awendo constituency expressed dissatisfaction after realising that the BVR kits had failed, saying that due to the failure it would be difficult to detect multiple registration.

At public works polling station in Nakuru, some BVR kits failed as well as in various centres in Molo.

In various other centres, voters have compalined that their details can not be traced in the Biometric kit, thus they are unable to vote.

IEBC had conducted biometric voter listing from November 19th to December 18th last year, a move that was lauded as it would prevent registration fraud.

Long queues have been seen at voting centers nationally with many lining as early as 4am.
