Kamishna wa IEBC Irene Masit sasa anadai Mwenyekiti wa shirika hilo Wafula Chebukati pekee ndiye aliyefahamu kuwa raia watatu wa Venezuela walikuwa wakiingia nchini na nyenzo za kupigia kura Julai mwaka huu.
Masit, katika hati yake ya kiapo ya kujibu ombi lililowasilishwa na Raila Odinga katika Mahakama ya Juu kupinga matokeo ya uchaguzi wa urais, alimshutumu Chebukati kwa kunyakua mamlaka yake na kuchukua hatua pekee hata kwa masuala ambayo yanahitaji ujuzi wote wa makamishna.
Kulingana na Masit, Chebukati hakuwafahamisha - kwenye kikao cha mashauriano au kwa njia yoyote ya mawasiliano - kwamba wageni wangeingia na nyenzo za uchaguzi, jambo ambalo anasema tume haikutarajia wakati huo.

Aliongeza: “Sikuwa na habari kuhusu ujio wa raia hao wa kigeni wakiwa na vifaa vya uchaguzi na hilo halijafikishwa kwa makamishna ama kwenye kikao au kwa njia nyingine yoyote ya mawasiliano na ilishangaza kama ilivyokuwa. natia shaka mwenyekiti.ndiye mtu pekee aliyefahamu kuwasili kwao.”Masit pia alipuuza madai yaliyotolewa na Chebukati katika taarifa mnamo Agosti 17, 2022 kwamba yeye, pamoja na makamishna wengine watatu - Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi, na Justus Nyang'aya - walijaribu kulazimisha marudio ya uchaguzi wa urais.
Alitaja madai hayo kuwa ni ya kufifisha tu uaminifu wao baada ya kupinga uamuzi wa Mwenyekiti wa tume kutangaza kile alichokiita kuwa matokeo ambayo hayajathibitishwa.

IEBC Commissioner Irene Masit now claims only the agency Chairman Wafula Chebukati was aware that three Venezuelan nationals were coming into the country with poll materials in July this year.
Masit, in her replying affidavit to the petition filed by Raila Odinga at the Supreme Court challenging the presidential election results, accused Chebukati of usurping his powers and acting solely even on matters that required all the commissioners’ knowledge.
According to Masit, Chebukati did not make it known to them – at the plenary or through any form of communication – that the foreigners would be jetting in with election material, which she says the commission was not even expecting at the time.
“…it is not by surprise that in the month of July, 2022 when the nation was struck by the news of Venezuela nations Salvador Javier Sosa Suarez, Joel Gustavo Rodriguez Garcia and Jose Grecorio Castellanos, a matter that is now in the public domain, arrested having arrived in the country with election materials none of the commissioners was aware of their coming nor possession of election materials but the chairman, Wafula Wanyonyi Chebukati,” she said in her affidavit.
“…the chairperson indeed went out public to defend the foreign nationals when the commission did not even expect election materials at the time thereby depicting the true person of the chairperson of the IEBC singly usurping the powers of the Commission albeit illegally and unconstitutionally.”
She further added: “I was not aware of the coming of the foreign nationals with election materials and the same had not been brought to the attention of the commissioners either at the plenary or through any other form of communication and it was surprising as it was suspicious that the chairperson was the only person aware of their arrival.”
Masit also rubbished a claim made by Chebukati in a statement on August 17, 2022 that she, alongside three other commissioners – Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi, and Justus Nyang’aya – attempted to force a presidential election run-off.
She termed this claim as merely meant to dent their credibility after they had protested against the commission Chairman’s decision to announce what she termed as unverified results.
